Can be a post, content, good, bad, or otherwise. Something unique to us.
Morons showing up to vandalize comments sections with “Linux!”. We get it, you have absolutely nothing useful to add.
It’s not an actual instance, but it was reserved by someone who made a lovely site. No, it’s not what you think.
It was EXACTLY what I thought
Nintendo is a blight on this earth and must be abolished.
I run Fireside Fedi. A show where I talk with folks from around the Fediverse. It’s all Fedi powered as well. Live stream, Owncast (https://stream.firesidefedi.live/), VOD Peertube (https://tubefree.org/@firesidefedi), GoToSocial and testing Bonfire for the social accounts.
I’m obviously biased though. :-)
Two leftists with minute political differences calling each other fascists.
My outsider impression is that this is just a long-standing hard-left tradition in general. Not really specific to anything on the Fediverse.
I remember going through the list of UK socialist and/or communist political parties. Lots of tiny, fragmented groups, many of which had split off from others over various disagreements.
I knew what this was before even clicking on it. :-)
I can say Luigi Mangione all I want.
Even the idiots here are pretty smart.
Appreciate the compliment!
Dude did nothing wrong.
- [email protected] is VERY unique both in content and in what gets posted.
- Almost everyone running Linux (or at least it seems like it 😉)
- Pretty diverse where people are at location-wise. Feels like early internet instead of services trying to bubble you into your place/content.
Im sure there are others. Looking forward to what everyone else says!
…Also Beans. Yeah didn’t expect that.
It may seem like we all run Linux, but some people run BSD too.
Ah yes, devil Linux.
Ill see myself out.
At some point im going to have to give it a try. I like playing around with alternative OSes for fun (like 9front, UXN, LFS, etc…).
At the end of the day bsd and linux are cousins.
some also uses illumos :)

I believe that the unix_surrealism guy is a BSD person.
I recently posted the question “What’s an unpopular UI opinion you have?” and I think it’s interesting the spread of OSes people are talking about:
I saw that thread! I really appreciated how I disagreed with a lot of the opinions there, it felt like a thread of actually unpopular opinions
it really feels like reddit in 2009
It really does.
I dual boot because I still haven’t figured out how to game on Linux because im dumb :P
Here’s an article on where the Proton checkbox is in the Steam settings. Just now I’m playing CIV4 and I had completely forgotten to think that it probably doesn’t work on Linux. Because it does now, absolutely fine :)
(The original FFVII doesn’t, though. But that’s the only Windows game I’ve encountered to not work!)
If you use Steam, there’s an option in the settings to always enable using Proton to handle Windows games. Works very well! Many games work faster than on Windows, but sometimes there are minor bugs.
- About half are Americans, about half are in non-US Western countries, 5% other
- everyone here hates the current US admin
- everyone uses adblockers
- everyone is anti-surveillance (except like 1 or 2 users you find occasionally defending mass surveillance that get downvoted into oblivion)
- everyone is either a Marxist Leninist, Left Anarchist, Social Democrat, or Democratic Socialist, except like a handful of liberals and like 2 conservatives
- almost everyone here supports vigilantism

- BEANS
- Frequently, you get extreme CCP shills falsely accusing you of Sinophobia, and simultaneously some are actually some closeted Sinophobes.
Germans
Mehr als ein Fünftel der Einwohnern in der EU sprechen Deutsch als Muttersprache. Durchwegs zu erwarten also!
Jedoch sind gar nicht alle deutschsprachige Deutscher! Calling all German-speakers German is like calling all English-speakers American.

Let me guess. You went to one of the .ml instances and got accused of being “Orientalist” after saying something that someone politically disagreed with?
Yeah, I still don’t completely understand that crowd. I don’t think that they’re actually shilling, because then they wouldn’t be advocating for North Korea. But there are a lot of people there who are clearly not interested in good-faith discussion. I just decided that it’s not worth dealing with them very early on.
The [email protected] crowd is determined to keep plunging in, though.
BEANS,CORN, ONION
Our memes feel very old internet and I miss those times.
You’re going to write beans in caps, not even mentioning corn in passing? This one right here officer!
Sorry my Internet Explorer is lagging
What’s your ICQ? I’ll send you the 32bit version, feels snappier.
liberals
Ugh I hate how this word is now more associated with economic ideology than social ideology.
Most of us can be described as liberals. We don’t want any discrimination based on gender, race, sexual orientation etc.
Can we please go back to using liberals in that sense?
Liberalism was originally about economics.
Liberal and Liberalist are two different terms, though. Very few liberalists are liberal.
If you support basic human rights, liberalism is diametrically opposed to your thinking. You can’t have human rights if Nestlé is allowed to own all the ground water underneath your village.
Yeah proper term for people that don’t want to discriminate based on gender, race, or sexual preference should be “normal” anyways.

Guten Tag!
That weird bot that assumed that woman’s identity and was messaging everyone?
Nicole noticed me once, that’s the only time in my life I ever felt special.
Glad thats gone. It was very strange!
I guess somebody finally replied to her and they’re off happily married. Good for her!
Don’t @ me, but I soak in the drama of Best of Redditor Updates and the fediverse isn’t quite suited to sagas like that yet.
But the guy who needed to not shit for 3 days made it over there. So that feels pretty noteworthy.
It’s one of my favourite subreddits just because I like having “real” stuff to read. I was wondering recently if we should just make a community for reposting the best r/BORU posts to Lemmy? And then, assuming Lemmy gets big enough, we’ll already have a spot for posting the best of Lemmy updates too.
there’s already a [email protected] but a lot of instances block lemmit for being bot content since their whole purpose is to repost reddit content which like. bots are actually super useful for that kind of thing. A LOT of users don’t seem to understand that they personally have the power to set instance blocks for their own account. so instead they push for defeds when like. just block the instance from your settings. it’s a checkbox. it’s not complicated! Sometimes I worry that all the defeds will create little insular echo chambers when the whole point of fedi is diversity.
A much more selective user base. People are very picky in what they upvote. I feel like in the Spez pool people upvoted or downvoted and would comment a lot easier. Here people vote with 3 options. Up, down or not. Feels much more deliberate. Also means you get a lot less comments (despite there being less users), because people follow the Bambi principle more here (if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all)
AND, I think there are some fediverse issues with the various clients and the fact that language is per post setting, hindering discovery.
I always felt on R that if you commented, most of the time, it goes down a black hole. You come into something “late” and no one sees your comment. No up/down votes at all. Which can feel very bad if you spent a lot of time on your response.
I like that “Bambi principle”. Thats a good way of putting it.
Your mention of unix_surrealism is a good point, it really is quite a unique community.
Also for me, the 3 day no poop question will forever be deeply tied to lemmy. It only unfolded days after I first joined, and I believe it was the first big piece of lemmy lore.
The Internet Archive rewrites people’s home instances?! Wut?
I have been looking for this post for a very long time. I was on Kbin back then lol
WTF! New rabbit hole?
Oh no.
I am using Arch, btw.
Do you have your programming socks on?
