wife and i are working our way through machete order and we’ve been joking how racist people are (especially leia) toward wookiees. so like racist toward sand people doesn’t sound out of character for old

Remember, in A New Hope the stormtroopers on the Death Star are missing on purpose. They want to put up a token resistance to let the gang escape with the tracker onboard.
I’m well aware that across most of the rest of the franchise Stormtroopers generally are bad shots.
However I argue that it is easy to view the entire original trilogy as Stormtroopers being competent. A New Hope is easy as you already pointed out that they were supposed to let them go. Plus the off screen extremely effective results against the Lars homestead and the Jawas which is both combat and effectively following the droids.
Empire Strikes Back they are extremely effective with invading the Hoth base. Luke is supposed to get to Vader so that part can be ignored. Then for the rest escaping Lando arranges a lot of surprise trouble for the troops as well as R2D2.
Then for the Ewoks I think almost everyone has it backwards. They all look at how tiny and low tech they are and draw conclusions from that. The more important thing to look at is their results. Not just the main battle but look before that.
- A scout (Wickket) is smart enough to make a reasonable level of basic communication with absolutely zero starting point with Leia.
- They successfully trap/ambush a Jedi and a Wookie and a droid with sensors. Ok yea required some stupidity on Chewies part but still incredibly impressive on the Ewoks part.
- They were literally planning to eat several of the heroes.
- The traps everywhere. They clearly didn’t make the big traps just in the day or two when the heroes showed up. That forest is an absolute death trap and miracle that the trap the heroes triggered didn’t kill them.
- Battle morale at large not breaking under attack from mechanized and ranged weapons.
- Immediate willingness to ride a speeder and a successful dismount in spite of zero clue how they work.
That is just what I can think of off the top of my head. I’m sure there is more. Honestly they are closer to facing an army of fantasy dwarfs than what people say they are like.
Plus the Empire is pretty fascist, and they would definitely look at the Ewok’s and their low tech society in an especially dismissive way. Then when the Ewoks start winning, this would hit Stormtrooper morale pretty hard.
Also, misrepresenting the capabilities of indigenous people isn’t exactly unheard of in this universe or others.
What do you mean other universes? This happened in a galaxy far far away.
after all, the ultimate downfall of the imperium is underestimating the tactical prowess of fuzzy teddy bears with rocks
Everyone’s in here making excuses but really it’s just not great writing / continuity
Yes…there’s many many examples of poor writing and inconsistency.
…but this is just a joke and it stretches the meaning of the ANH scene to make an inaccurate meme. In the first film the point of Obi Wans comments, in my mind, was to highlight the type of weapons used. It’s more of a “parsec” situation. He was trying to describe the actual impact of the weapon and we’re being distracted by the use of the word precise. He should have said “impact spread”, or something else that wouldn’t have made sense to viewers at the time.
the parsec thing is also meant to be a joke in the film. the script calls for guiness to react incredulously to the obvious nonsense but his reaction is very subtle on screen.
thats why I’m here
As much as people seem to like sucking him off, George Lucas is a pretty terrible writer and director. Star Wars only became a hit due to his wife’s editing of the film; if it were left as Lucas’ original vision it would have been a fairly boring flop. I present as further evidence: The Phantom Menace. That movie objectively sucks.
Yeah I watched a YouTube video on how her and some other guy basically redid the whole movie in post. She saved that movie
Yeah but that sniper was the famous raider Swargo Tulponian, there are 3 books in the expanded universe about him
I genuinely have no idea if you’re serious or trolling.
I took the risk and googled it. He’s trolling.
We got Swargo’d!
You can swargo my balls.
All relevant books were rendered noncanon when Disney bought the property, so it doesn’t matter.
Who gives a fuck what Disney considers canon?
I mean, yeah, a lot of people do, but they shouldn’t.
Everything before and after The Empire Strikes Back is non-canon
the entirety of cannon is the six minutes of a new hope starting at the 32 minute mark. everything else i refuse to acknowledge as relevant
Swargo is real to me
Fair.
Who gives a fuck about who gives a fuck what Disney considers canon!
You take that back.
That’s what Disney did.
Sadly, it wasn’t my decision.
Disney is non-canon.
the cannon is anything we the fans find compelling. everything else is only maintained by adherents of mousketeer orthodoxy
I support your mission.
That describes the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe. Every character was critically important to the survival of the galaxy! Some strong books, some weak ones, and its ridiculous storylines all look phenomenal compared to the travesty of Disney canon, IMO
the name is far too normal for tusken raider
The Glup Shiddo cameo in the second book was squandered potential.
True, but I liked how they referenced Glup in the early Yuu’zhan Vong books by the asking about how he basically was the only reason Tattooine survived the Desolation! Nice nod to previous characters
The Yuu’zhan Vong books were fucking great in comparison. They finally gave us some closure on how Swargo and Yuu’zhan made that black vase in Luke’s home on Tattoine (present in the background when Obi-Wan gives Anakin’s lightsaber to Luke). We’d have to wait three years for the Morp Pumboô quadrilogy of comics to see how the materials got stolen to make it in the first place, but it was worth it.
Seriously about to check Neural Viz for these names
Coming soon to Disney Plus
Swargo Tuponian: A Star Wars Story
My favorite nitpick in the phantom menace is in that scene.
In the Cinematic release, and I think the VHS release as well, the Tusken raiding party here is using Slugthrowers, a weapon primarily only used against Lightsaber wielders since it can’t be deflected like a blaster bolt.
When it was re-released for DVD it was changed to a Red Blaster bolt. Personally, I think it makes more sense for the Tusken people to use slugthrowers, since they have access to everything they need to make gunpowder on Tatooine (guano from caves, hydrocarbons from the black fruit sugar), but to attain blaster gas they need to trade with the Settlements, something they prefer against.
Wouldn’t just a light sabre incinerate a slug?
There was a sith, former apprentice of Vader in the good canon version that used a weapon that was like a cat o nine tails but it used both energy and normal metal components and jedi had a very hard time dealing with it, other than Luke, which the good canon had progress into a powerful Jedi that could even force project an image of himself without dying, but also valued his friendships and connections and didn’t briefly consider killing his own nephew and would have never fucking gone into hiding as a hermit instead of dealing with the problem he created.
Anyways, this devolved a bit into a fuck Disney rant, but the point was that someone using a weapon that combined lightsabre blades with metal blades was extremely effective against jedi just using lightsabres. Luke could only handle her because he was a beast with and without a lightsabre.
It would melt it, spraying the wielder with molten metal.
Congrats, you successfully got shot with molten metal instead of regular metal.
Not positive on the actual physics but in universe they can’t block the slugs, the metal just gets superheated and goes through the lightsaber
I’m sure they could raid some here and there. Considering Tattooine is Outer Rim and considered dangerous, I wouldn’t be surprised if the villages or homesteads they raid would contain some.
Of course, this would make the use here a bit weird but maybe they used the blasters for fast moving targets? I image they’d also attack smaller caravans of speeders or something, and for those a slugthrower might not be fast enough.
Not sure what the canon says, but it really seems like blaster bolts travel considerably more slowly than a high power rifle bullet, so I’d still pick the slug thrower.
Lucas: “Should I go back and read what I wrote before? Nah… nobody’s going to care, it’s just movie.”
Yeah, but sand people use slug throwers.
Though there’s no canonical information about the speed of blaster bolts, they are very slow on screen. You can follow them with your naked eye.
You can’t however see or follow the slug thrower’s bullet that might even travel at super sonic speeds.
Leading a target is much easier the less time a projectile needs to reach it.However, sand people and stormtroopers train with different weapons on different targets for different situations. So it is very possible that sand people are generally better at shooting longer ranges with high speed projectiles, taking wind speed, gravitation, coriolis effect, etc into account while stormtroopers are superior (and more precise) in hectic, close quarters situations where you have to aim and shoot quickly.
That being said, nobody checked for continuity while making the prequels anyway. And Obi-Wan is famous for talking about things “from a certain perspective.”
I’ve seen storm troopers and they are absolutely shit at close range
Any range now that I think about it
That’s why the defenders of Tantive IV held out so long I guess?
Reminder: it’s fiction. ;-)
Yeah… So?
I don’t remember the dialogue like that. I’m sure my brain has been polluted by decades of nonsense…but I remember the point of that scene being that Imperials had better weapons, not aim.
I just went and checked, and the line is indeed “only imperial stormtroopers are so precise”.
I also went and checked…yes he said that…but he wasn’t referring to the precision of the targeting…how would he be able to judge that? In my mind he was referring to the type of blaster bolts. Or…in my mind when I was 12 or whenever I saw it.
I assume the marks from the shots are aimed at specific components to stop the sand crawler.
“Uhh, yes, we were definiatly aiming those components sir.”
Meh, I guess that could have been it…but I think in order to think that’s what he meant you have to be reverse engineering the meme. I just took it to mean “these look like Imperial blaster burns…they’re from better weapons”.
Sand people sound like when the windex bottle is running low
They are basically Fremen but everyone in the view uses a slur instead.
The only good episode of the Book of Boba Fett with Boba Fett in it was just Dune in a trenchcoat
Some of that Sand People racism from Anakin must’ve rubbed off on Obiwan.
Maybe its less about literal rifle accuracy and more about Stormtroopers having better knowledge of machinery and so damaged critical components to disable the sand trawler?
Though I think the top scene was more of Obi Wan knowing the Empire was finally catching up with him and trying to relay to Luke how dire the situation was.
ObiWan doesnt know the difference between “accurate” and “precise”
He also probably thinks that stormtroopers are of the same caliber as clone troopers.
“The blast points are tiny as hell. Sand people’s would left craters in this thing”
In colloquial language the terms are basically synonyms.
What they don’t tell you is the podracer he was aiming at flew by 6 seconds earlier.
That one particular Stormtrooper: I need something robust. Precise.
They lost a little something after, you know, the incident.
