Yes, there’s more to it than that and it’s quite stupid and also quite bigoted. Republicans don’t need to know that. They didn’t and won’t read his book anyway.

When he brought up the issue with his grandmother — known to Vance as “Mamaw” — she replied bluntly: “Don’t be a fucking idiot, how would you know that you’re gay?”

When Vance explained his reasoning, she laughed.

“JD, do you want to suck dicks?” she said, according to the book.

So… 8 year old JD Vance instead wanted to eat pussy?

Considering not all straight women want to suck dicks, I don’t think the desire to suck dick is a good determinant of whether you’re gay or not anyway.

Shit, I’m bi, and I don’t really like the idea of giving oral to any gender. The thought of body fluids in my mouth kinda grosses me out, unfortunately. Makes me happy that people love it, though. The world would be a better place if everyone got to experience their ass getting eaten voraciously. It really is an amazing experience.

Also, if eight year old Vance brought this up with his public school teacher and they gave him the same kind of response (minus the “suck dicks” and “fucking idiot” parts), conservatives would absolutely lose their shit over “grooming”

I mean, for some people, it is. When you’re exploring your identity, you don’t always get it right on your first try. Just like there are people who are convinced they’re straight that are actually gay (or bi, or pan, or what have you). Though that is far more common, largely because of the societal pressures to conform to heteronormativity.

But then, perhaps that truly is Vance’s case here. Maybe he actually is gay, and his whole… everything is just him trying desperately to convince himself otherwise.

Every straight person I’ve talked to says they knew they were straight very early on. This goes for me as well. There was a brief moment in my teen years where I asked myself if I might be gay. It lasted about two seconds. The result was negative. There was no way I was going to be gay.

If this dude “convinced” himself he was gay, well, I think he might just be at least bi.

Yup. I’m bi, but I always knew that I wanted kids and a family so my “choice” was obvious. I also saw my class mates mercilessly bully an openly gay kid, so I simply chose not to go through that myself and never told anyone how I felt.

Idk, man. There are definitely people I know with a very clear gender identity from an early age. But their were plenty more that weren’t so cemented at one pole or the other of the Kinsey Scale.

If this dude “convinced” himself he was gay, well, I think he might just be at least bi.

The problem is fundamentally of definition. Are you simply Bisexual or are you Deluded By Satan Into Having Impure Thoughts?

The answer is entirely rooted in your morality. If you’re convinced homosexuality is evil, then of course you’re going to feel like any non-straight impulse must be a sin.

Without fail, another anti-LGBT Republican with stories about “sexual confusion” and “the temptation of same-sex relations” that all but confirm that they are queer and closeted.

A coworker of mine once tried to pick my brain on gay marriage say something to the effect of “people like you and I wouldn’t be resisting the urge if we didn’t know it was wrong”. I had to pop his bubble by explaining to him that I had never felt the temptation to be gay ever in my life because I am straight, but if I really wanted dick I’d seek it out because sex is fun and I’ll have it with anyone if think it will be mutually enjoyable.

He literally couldn’t wrap his brain around the idea that I was completely willing to have sex with any person that struck my fancy, but that men were never even a consideration. He was experiencing the exact opposite.

Needless to say, he’s still deeply closeted, but he doesn’t bring up gay marriage stuff anymore to me because I think I gave him an ongoing existential crisis. I hope he figures it out eventually…

But statistically, once you’re so deep in the closet that you’ve convinced yourself that everyone wants gay sex, and only “sinners” give into that urge, you’re probably not in the path to figuring anything out. Unfortunately, these people always vote for Fascism, constructing the prison that they themselves will be locked in.

    1. Fundamentally misrepresenting homosexually as self delusion and a choice, or

Eh?? The unenlightened bigots are still going on about how being gay is a choice? That somehow choosing to be miserable and conform to a heteronormative would make the gay go away?! Only to later either break free of the brainwashing which led to conforming to an obvious lie of being straight or simply taking a one way trip out of this world. Stupid, fascist Republicans don’t have much to offer but ruin and one big white world, drained of all its color. Hopefully, this November, we trounce these entitled fascists.

In my own personal experience as a child, I simply knew that I was different. I didn’t realize until the hormones activated how different I was! Then again, I was able to reflect on that with something called ‘reading about the experiences of others and trying to find points in common’. JD Vance likely had nothing but bigoted talking points screamed into his ears and he gave in.

I’m a pretty good looking guy, and not being afraid of gay people, with plenty of exposure, I’ve had a few come on to me. I’ve even had one tell me he knows I’m straight and that the only thing he wants is to suck my dick and he would make it fantastic. I figure that with having the hardware and practice, they probably know a good deal about physically pleasing a man, so I’ve seriously considered it.

But like you, I can’t get over the fact that I am just not attracted to men. Even when very drunk. Literally struck out with multiple women rather than taking a sure blowjob.

If anyone would have made that choice, being a horny and open man desperate for a blowjob with opportunity, I’d be a prime candidate. And I couldn’t even choose to be bi.

i still don’t get why any argument on either side is revolving around whether it’s a choice or not. like, ok, discriminating based on immutable qualities is obviously bad and that’s why people are making that point but the end result is this here: people just deny it’s immutable.

the actual argument in my opinion is even if it were a choice so fucking what? just because something is a choice doesn’t make it suddenly ok to take rights away from people who have that choice. otherwise i would have some fantastic ideas about what should be done with republicans; it is a choice to be republican after all.

Yeah, at the end of the day, I strongly feel being certain things is simply an immutable part of being a person. Nobody chooses to be straight, gay, bi, pan, or anything else related to attraction. There is a choice to ignore or act upon those feelings, often people are put in terrible situations as a result.

I do agree with your argument though, as human rights so remain intact regardless of choice or no choice! We all live in a world we can’t yet escape and need some semblance of social contract to survive. I have a lot of fun ideas for what to do with Republicans as well; as it is a choice they’ve made to be bigoted, shortsighted fascists. Compulsory Drag Show attendance, they’re invited to a Library bit; they are going to get read to filth and hate every moment of self-awareness which will be inflicted upon them. Silly, but that’s the tip of the iceberg!

He probably says this to lend credibility to the idea that homosexuality is something that can be “cured” or “outgrown”
