It just occurred to me when calling my college roommate that basically, it’s three. With my mom, I let it go all the way to voicemail, as she’s nearly 80 and may be on the other end of the house.
But with most of my friends, if they don’t answer in two rings, it’s a lost cause absent external influences.
All of them until I get voicemail.
With modern digital phones, the number of rings you hear when calling out doesn’t necessarily match the number of rings on the receiving end. The first few rings you hear when calling out are often “comfort noise” added locally by the network operator and are heard before the call is even fully routed to the receiver.
I always wait till voicemail because I hate it when I scramble to find my phone to answer a call and they hang up early
I try to always leave a voicemail so they know why I called. On my phone, voicemails are automatically transcribed, so I assume everyone has this.
If it’s a business that I’m calling or someone that I’m calling for work, I wait for four rings.
For my friends, I sincerely cannot remember a time where I have called them ever. I either text or speak to them in person.
It depends. Is there a voicemail box I can wait for? Around 5-6 rings, I start hoping to hear that so I can hang up and try again (or in rare cases, I might leave an actual voicemail - i know ao many people who don’t check theirs though…)
If there is none, and I really wanna get through to someone, then I’ll let their phone ring off the hook, especially at work where our users have landlines at their desk. Hey, if you put a phone number on a ticket and then come back and have your boss contact my boss to escalate the ticket, then you better answer your phone when I have follow-up questions about your poorly-written ticket. After ~10 rings, I’ll put my phone on speaker and turn the volume down as I turn back to my computer and resume working, the ring barely audible in the background…
depends on the level of importance of the call. I generally do not make calls unless needed though so usuallly right to voicemail but sometimes its kinda not that important and maybe I will hang up after a few rings.
5 to 6, I’m ringing a phone that’s more than likely on the person, so anything beyond 4 they are probably not gonna answer, I just give 5-6 I case their phones stuck in their pocket.
