Overall no but mainly from wasteful business usage without any real return. If an individual uses one instead of like streaming video or such to entertain themselves then im not sure they are not using less electricity than they otherwise would. If they are using it for searching and can get a response that is equivalent to several searches in one query then it just might break even. I they are minipulating images or creating content and they otherwise might use other software to do. Well I don’t know as I have not done a comparison and I have a suspicion that its to variable to get a good call but I would not be surprised if it ends up being pretty even. The other real problem is people doing things they otherwise would not. So before people who spent a lot of time learning and getting good at it made digital art but now its whoever and many are making things of far less value than they think it is. Also they might tell it to do the same thing again and again and it pretty much remakes the whole thing whereas a human would be just editing it a bit. The result is a bit like graffitti. A lot of garbage for the resources used but sometimes someone here and there does something good.

I have been saying this for awhile. I am sorta hoping we see open source llms that are trained on a curated list of literature. its funny that these came out and it seemed like the makers did not take the long known garbage in - garbage out into account.

This is why I would encourage people to use llms for something not important. like video games or interests. You likely will have enough knowledge around the things to catch the “hallucinations” and hopefully that will give you perspective on their use for more important things.

well one. go on a date. you have progressive ecological destruction going on so enjoy as much nature as possible. I would choose outdoor things over indoor if they are in an interesting area. So a concert in a field meh but like going to something at ravinia (its in chicagoland) and getting lawn seats then yeah. have you been to a ren faire? Better yet is there an sca group in your area? try and go to one of their things. Any non for profit cons like dragon con or gen con. Go to any state parks, national parks, zoos, museums, or whatnot you have not gotten to that you can get to. Do any activity you have preference for. For me that would be like martial art classes as I don’t like sports and its kinda cool. travel by bike, walking, and public transit. Bike in particular. If you think civilization will fall then a good bike that you like and are familiar with in good repair and kept up on maintenance will be huge.

ok I have to believe the guy replying is a shil at this point. Use of approved products is as old as the electric stystem. Its why the electric company does not have to come and inspect everything you have plugged into the grid and does not come out every time you get a new appliance. The standards are with the product as you correctly point out and the state does not allow on compliant products to be sold just like with refrigerators.
