The average housecat can run 20 to 25 miles per hour. So unless the rugby team has an elite sprinter, it’s likely that nobody there can match its speed. (And even if they could, good luck picking up a cat while you’re sprinting at your very top speed.)

      30, actually

I’m guessing no rugby player has ever been as fast as 2009 Usain Bolt, let alone over 2 mph faster…

Perry Baker and Marcos Moneta are two absolute flyers in the men’s game, clocking top speeds of 11.2m/s (40.3 km/h or 25.1mph). This helps them consistently finish among the top try scorers in tournament after tournament.

I reckon they could persistence hunt it tho. Or just use a laser pointer.

Why would I not simply wait for it to get tired?

Well, the context is that they’re at a rugby game, so presumably they want to finish the game in a reasonable amount of time.

I struggle to believe that two rugby teams are incapable of corralling a cat off a field, but you have a point.

I’d pay good money to see the cat unleashing chaos.

It’ll run to the top of a really tall tree. Cats can sit idle and wait for a really long time, like a week.
