I explain:
Knowing that our world is ruled by fascists, I will prefer to prepare for the worst-case scenarios. If you think I’m crazy or something, go and scroll through the news feeds or watch TV, where the news is easy to fake with special AI models and you won’t even notice.
For example, in 2027 or later, the AI will gain autonomy and start issuing loyalty points to all people, and those who want to escape will be caught by drones, imprisoned for re-education, or immediately shot and the corpses for fertilizer.
I wonder if it is possible to hide in some little-known forest, survive there for a long time, at least five years, until I am discovered, or is it better to give up and buy a revolver with a full magazine so as not to miss?
or is it better to give up and buy a revolver with a full magazine
quick point of fact: revolvers do not use magazines. that’s kinda their thing.
We just black out the sky, move underground and wait for the chosen one.
Its better to organize with your fellow human beings. They cant do this without the datacenters, which are very much not mobile or subtle.
AI are electricity. Electricity doesn’t like rubber. Cover yourself in rubber. Problem solved.
The world has been run by fascists before. Hiding is cowardice, and that is EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Don’t give it to them. If you want to die proud of yourself, then get involved in the resistance.
Work on rejecting big tech. Do your part to defund them, don’t give them any money or data if you can.
If you have money to spare, donate to organizations that work to protect our rights. Or donate your time if you have some to spare.
Learn about mesh networks and buy some hardware. It is cheap, a fun hobby, and may become crucial infrastructure at some point in the near future.
Talk to your neighbors, get involved. Read about anarchism and get inspired to act locally to help others. Don’t fret the big picture, just try and leave your little bit of land better than you found it.
And when those fascists come for you and yours, give them hell.
Die proud.

Sure, it is. To facilitate a life like this you might want to:
- get a job that involves working in the wilderness anyway, e.g arborist, hunter, botanist, zoologist, river steward (engineering or environmental science role)
- get training on how to protect yourself in the wilderness, e.g filtering water, finding food
- create your own nature project in the meantime time, like a re-wilded allotment, an apiary, or river remediation. This is good practice but also might be useful if you went through with a wilderness retreat
One of the reasons I chose to study engineering was in the hopes that, if society collapses or I depart into the wilderness, I’d know a thing or two about setting up my own clean running water and structures. A plumber and carpenter would know way more about those things than me, but I still feel like I know the basics now. (Also, potentially I could get a job in river management which means I might become more familiar with wild spots that are good to camp out or live full time at.)
However I think it’s better to try and coexist with whatever crazy events are happening in society. You can get the best of both worlds - set up a get-away spot in the wilderness but spend most of your time working and living in civilisation. The thing is, you have so much more freedom and mobility in society - you can mobilise against any threats rather than just run away from them! You can persuade people to your cause.
If you want to resist AI without departing from society, then some ideas are:
- training in something like law or a creative field (yeah, get fucked all you STEMbros and finance fatcats who said art and English was useless
- Simply not using it - this is a surprisingly powerful step to making you immune to AI takeover. People who use Chatgpt regularly have their lives ruined.
- Support local libraries, and art galleries.
- consumerist based things like not buying the latest phone model, or cars (or at least self driving ones).

Revolvers don’t have magazines…
I don’t even own a gun and I know this.
