I’m actually enjoying the smaller community. I joined reddit back in 2012. It was popular but not at the level it became. It was also mostly millennials back then.

I met a lot of cool people in meetups. I actually ran local monthly reddit meetups for 5 years until I moved.

Now reddit is mostly bots. But even before the level it is now, there were a lot of grifters. Rage bait. Thirsty posts. A lot of theft in art communities (not an issue anymore cause AI has stolen everything).

Fake bot accounts reposting front page stuff 2 months later and getting back on the front page. Trolls were getting out of hand.

All the companies selling reddit accounts. You could literally buy up votes. Still can.

Its just been going downhill for a while. And then the 2025 censorship and purge of veteran users.

All of my accounts are perma banned cause I outted some extreme hostile maga trolls. (And id do it again!)

You know there was a time when a lot of reddit was actually just being funny in a slightly antagonizing way. Like every one would play along and just ham it up. People do it here and it’s definitely a more comfortable online space to be in.

Where people asked genuine questions they wanted to know the answer to instead of just asking for people to validate their opinion. Which is most of social media.

I sound like an old fart and maybe I am. But my gen experienced the Internet for the first time in our youth. And online social spaces were king of magical. I think I still cling to the idea that they can still be places of possibility. Places to connect genuinely with like minded people.

Back in my day, You could make your own geocities websites. For free. You had chat rooms. Yahoo games where you played with strangers across the country and chatted with them.

    Msn Messenger.

I’m getting all nostalgic. And off topic.

Anyway. I like the smaller community in lemmy.

It’s probably like 90% real people. For now.

And i don’t think anyone sells up-votes . For now.

I don’t mind if there is less content. The quality is decent and the comment section is more manageable and easier to be included in.

I hope we never change the Lemmy upvotes.

      • No total karma, each comment stands on its own
      • No score requirements to post anywhere

Both of these, especially together, created a chilling effect on open discussion. People would even delete their posts to preserve their karma.

Even when you’re reading someone else’s comments, it’s delightfully difficult to cyberstalk them. “Sort by controversial” or “sort by negative” were great ways to find the least popular thing anyone said and smugly quote it years later.

Sure, there’s third-party sites where you can see all that and more, but I’m not tempted to use them, and they reveal their users as losers.

Edit: to the downvoters, jk I don’t care

Reddit conveniently didn’t mention that 50% of its traffic is from bots, and most humans get permabanned by power-tripping mods.

    WE DON’T MISS YOU, REDDIT.

I keep repeating the story of how I got banned on Reddit but I’ll keep doing so cause it’s funny, basically I uploaded an NSFW meme with nudity IN a NSFW meme community that allowed nudity, I don’t know what the bots saw maybe because the image was more in low res anyways basically the second I uploaded the meme it said “Your Post has been removed by Reddit’s filters” and I thought okay, not the first time. I refresh and got a permanent ban and I thought…

      Why?

They are perma banning for anything now. I went to the stages of grief when it first happened. My main account was 13 years old 300,000 karma.

I was prime mod of r/ask psychology for a decade. So much free work I did. And I was a good mod. I almost never banned anyone permanently. Usually 7 day bans for being an ass hole.

I worked with people to get their post approved. I always tried to help people understand the rules with examples or give them suggestions on how to make their post.

I admitted when I was wrong and fixed the issues when someone flagged them.

I also always had high quality support mods on my team. And we often discussed issues with people so that we weren’t too biased.

Running that sub was important to me. So much disinformation is spread about psychology topics. And I wanted at least 1 place that people could trust.

We gave credential flair to experts and I personally had them send me proof of credentials.

It took me years to polish that sub. I learned to code the automod for that sub.

Me and other mods created wikis for career info and education.

So much work. Uncredited. Unpaid. And couldn’t even get admins to respond to me.

They care so little about their content creators and mods. But we made reddit.

I tried sending appeals multiple times. No response.

I was angry. I was in denial. I bargained. But ultimately I accepted it. And ive walked away.

The ask psychology sub was left in good hands. And maybe it’s time I passed on the torch anyway.

Started moding that sub when I was working on my B.A and now I’m finishing up my PhD. It was just this sort of passion project for me.

All things change. I left it in good hands. It is what it is.

Damn, I actually didn’t expect a story like that especially from how old your account was at that point.

Now I’m even more mad about Reddit heaaring those stories and I’m saying time and time again that Reddit has an AWFUL moderating system almost like it’s not there at all.

Don’t let those fake points though define you man, I also was making content SFW and NSFW, I was thinking alright if I’m in the r/presidents subreddit what is something engaging I can post, I used to think that a lot of karma was everything but eh in the end who cares.

Yeah I’m not the only one who was a long term user who got perma banned over some b.s. there are comments all over Lemmy of stories like mine.

I guess most of that karma was from answering questions. And I was kind of proud of it. But I reminded myself when I lost the account. It is fake internet points. It doesn’t actually matter. It doesn’t undo the work.

I also used to post tutorials for various hobbies I do. That’s also been a pain cause now when people want to message me a question, they can’t.

I was pretty active in 3d printing subs. I made models to fix problems and made some troubleshooting tutorials and mod tutorials. Luckily I linked to 3d website accounts so people message me through there sometimes with questions.

It’s just been like. Very inconvenient. And it feels like something was stolen from me.

I guess I’m still a bit sour about it. And now all my alt accounts are banned as of last month. I haven’t even used them for anything.

They just did some sweep where they found alt accounts of banned accounts and banned those too.

My 2nd account was 8 years with 10k karma.

Also I modded two small subs. No other mods. So I don’t know what’s even going on with those now. R/lightpainting and r/paracosms

Very small subs but they need someone to keep the spam in check.

My other sub I modded for a decade was the one that caused the ban. It was for the city I’m in. And maga trolls starter harassing protest posts. Threats. I posted a list of their user names. Saying these people are trolls and are banned. Apparently that’s “doxing”.

And that Asmongold guy posted my user name on his stream and on Twitter and told people to harass me.

I got a lot of messages. Weak ass threats. So many threatening to sue me for banning maga trolls. It was actually a bit amusing.

They also tried to find my identity but a decade on a psych sub taugt me to keep identifying info off reddit. They kept sending me links to random people’s Facebook saying “this you?”. Or “your dog is ugly”.
            I don’t have a dog.

I was worried they thought they found me and was harassing some poor innocent person.

I sent screen shots of the Twitter post to reddit admin. Reported the threat messages.

Also a week before that I messaged them and told them my sub was getting targeted and asked for assistance. No reply.

But the magas reported everything I did. Including some political art. And I was perma banned for inciting violence via political art. And doxing.

The art was the statue of Liberty holding Elon’s severed head. Sure it was extreme (that’s the point of political Art). But. It was within reason. Imo.

I got banned for making a joke about a porn star that died in r/entertainment. I tried muting the community and hiding it but since it’s a general community it was always on my feed so when I was on my porn account I kept commenting their without realizing and I was banned for ban evasion. Here’s my joke: 1 like = 1 wank

Jokes aside at least the good thing about reddit is that there were a lot of people that I became friends with and liked talking to on AskRedditAfterDark for example. Men and Women alike, so yeah women exist, shocker more news at 10
