Seems the country is not aligned with the views on Lemmy.

America has, since inception, been absolutely fine with violence, often celebrating it, and completely disgusted with sexuality. It’s perhaps the single most backwards thing about North American culture, imo.

But what do you expect out of a society whose entire history is “we wanted to go somewhere else, so we came to this place and killed the natives that got in our way.”

It’s fascinating that a country where a place like Hooters is normal and strip clubs are a socially acceptable place to hang out in is so worked up over sex things

I think that’s changed a bit. Hooters went bankrupt, and many local governments have heavy restrictions on strip clubs, such as no nipples can be shown, no physical contact, no license to serve liquor, etc.

And that just makes the whole deal weirder. No physical contact is reasonable of course. But have a person be practically naked, dancing sensually is fine, unless there’s nipples. Can’t have that, it’s too much.

          The US is very weird.

I think the laws are just meant as a soft-ban. There may be legal complications with outright banning strip clubs. The no physical contact takes away what I think make up stripper’s largest income source, and no nipples and alcohol makes it a less attractive place to go. I had a few hours to waste in a city once, waiting on a flight, and walked into one of these strip clubs. There was only one stripper there, one bartender, and I was the only customer; so I’m guessing it really did hurt the market.

American pop culture is fine with sex as long as it’s not two men:

        ✅ Woman kissing a woman
        ✅ Woman kissing a man
✅ Woman having sex with a woman
✅ Woman having sex with a man
✅ Woman having sex with herself
✅ Man kissing a woman (already covered)
        ❌ Man kissing a man
✅ Man having sex with a woman (already covered)
❌ Man having sex with a man
✅ Man having sex with himself

But only when it’s consensual. It’s okay when that gets violent and exploitative.
