this week’s reading is Filterworld

I discovered beehaw (bee-y’all?) this week while learning about some lefty DIY group alternatives to big tech, howdy! migrating away from Microsoft and Google - using Fedora on my computer now which is also what I used back in high school - and it’s been a pretty enriching time sink as I continue job searching and seeking new community. looking forward to spending some time here 🎶
Welcome to Beehaw!

A thing (well, a set of things, it’s something like 2 dozen SKUs) I designed just got a UL listing for the first time, so that’s exciting. Not my first time working with UL, but first time something that I’ve taken all the way from concept to a manufacturable product has been UL listed.
The depression hasn’t come back yet.
It’s a relief!
I’m back! Sort of. I spend way too much time on bsky these days, although it’s not looking so rosy anymore. Also, I’m trans and kobold now and it fucking rocks!
I recently got out of bsky. It’s just not fun anymore.
I was a beta tester for Bluesky so I’ve been using it for a long time. I have ZERO problems. As far as I can tell users have 100% control over their feed. What exactly is making your experience ‘not fun’?
Too many people. Too much scrolling. Endless content, none of it with any meaning. 300 character chicklets of… Of what? And does it make my life better or make me any more informed? I just get instant updates on all clownshow as the world burns.
And even better… I get the opportunity to shout into a void as if it makes any difference to anything that’s going on. At least if I do that here, I might find a single serving friend and a short conversation.
I understand. Different strokes for different folks. I mainly use it to read about things I’m interested in like scientific fields such as space exploration.
I’d suggest using Bluesky in ways that most people wouldn’t think about.
For example, you could use it to keep up to date about local events in your geographic area. Another example would be to follow a very unique subject such as macrophotography.
Yeah. Admittedly, having not carefully curated my feed is part of the problem. I feel like I need to create a new user and start over. I’m having difficulty being asked to give it the time of day at this point.
Thanks for the recommendation! I may do that later.
I feel like I need to create a new user and start over.
That may be easier for you and you’re welcome.

I’m having a weird experience with Google’s “Discovery” feed. Apparently, I’ve blocked enough keywords and sources (~100), that all it shows now, is science, tech, and space. Makes me… want to check it from time to time? 😅
Google’s “Discovery” feed
Did you mean Bluesky’s?
I haven’t had a lot of success with the discovery feed. You could try a third party app such as Skeets.
Still haven’t found a new job. Many more “sorry we loved your vibe but we found someone more experienced” to add to my resume tho.
Enjoy that problem while you can! Soon enough, it’ll be “we loved your vibe, but you have too much experience, and we only have the budget for entry-level.”
it’s rough out there, I’m sorry you’re going through that 🫂 I’ve been job hunting too since finishing grad school. hoping for some good news for us soon!
Best of luck to you!
The only difference between weeks is whether my batteries hold up. It’s overall an ongoing shitshow with every offer of work and temporary housing ending up in ghosting.
still riding out my burnout but otherwise good. i’m going to a birthday party for a friend shortly, starting off my week by reading Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez.
my week is all about planning to start a local Working Families Party group and preparing a series of campus teach-ins as a protest against new policy re: gender in the classroom. fueled by dense bean salad. lots of dense bean salad.
Well, my salary just went in, so I started paying my bills. Just now, I renewed my monthly public transit pass, and I am pretty much debt free - until next month, that is.
