I want to try self-hosting here at Lemmy, but I don’t know how, and I’m not sure if I have the necessary materials.

    I’ve been running a docker compose stack the last couple years with no issue. It can be simple-ish to set up but that depends on your experience level.

    If you have specific questions there are plenty of people willing to help, myself included.

    There are good spots on lemmy for help in this thread as well as an IRC chat for support if needed. I’ve been helped there more than once.

    Look into nginx. See if you can make a basic webpage and access it from a different computer.

    You will need to set up port forwarding, or use a VPN that supports it.

    For necessary materials any old PC would work for trying it out. Old laptop, old desktop, whatever. Others linked the install instructions.

    Running a full instance with active users is a different story, moderation and hardware upgrades become more of a thing.
