He didn’t. Mamdani won a majority of NYC, but he lost the conservative parts to Cuomo.
That said, Mamdani got a decent amount of small business support for campaigning on streamlining a lot of the city’s regulations to bring down costs. This includes getting rid of the secondary market for various medallions.
He didn’t? They’re shitting themselves in a fury and shitposting about moving to Florida.
I wish them the best in the next hurricane after FEMA is dismantled.
Generally you never win by taking the left or right voters. They already vote for/against you no matter what (or abstain from voting because they are so far left or right that they basically think you and your opponent is equally too far left/right).
You win by making the undecided middle vote for you. Every vote you gain from the center is also a vote your opponent loses.
Well I really hope the Democrats do that in the 2026 midterms and 2028 election. Seriously!
A book I’m currently reading seems to agree:
Obama began his re-election year with the certainty that he knew the name of all 69,456,897 Americans whose votes had carried him to the White House. Of course, these votes had been cast secretly, but Narwhal’s data was so detailed that the analysts were able to identify the Obama supporters in every district. Each elector was given a probability rating between zero and a hundred. Zero meant they would vote for Romney. A hundred meant they were a guaranteed Obama supporter. The trick was to ignore those voters and focus all the campaign’s resources on voters in swing states with scores between forty-five and fifty-five.
without using the terms “socialism”
???
He literally called himself a “Democratic Socialist” and still won
lol
Just be a genuine human being and not be a corporate-dem
Easy
I don’t know much about NYC political dynamics, but a quick survey of Wikipedia seems to indicate he didn’t. By Wikipedia’s summary Cuomo all but owned the ‘Somewhat Conservative’ and ‘Very Conservative’ vote, it just turns out that those groups only make up 18% of NYC.
My guess is his win had more to do with gaining the establishment / centrist liberal vote than any ability to swing conservatives to socialism. My little experience tells me it probably had to do with focusing on practicality. Key points like tax funded busses and child care make voting for Mamdani voting for one’s self interest rather than an ideology.

Basically, he focused on needs for NYers.
-childcare, busing for kids, rent controls.
Also watch anything with him out and about. Like. He’s very genuine where most politicians have that “photo op smile.”
