You can use high value materials to pay the cost to make it taste good or give up a little bit of your soul to it.

Good chefs know how to perform the ritual just more efficiently with less cost.

This tracks. Some people only have a basic proficiency, following simple combinations and predictable transmutations, while experts create delicious substances otherwise unknown to man.

Combining plants, flesh, and various precious minerals into something edible is magic.

Yeah there is some real mercury to gold stuff out there.

I mean in a mercury to less toxic mercury example you can make a really interesting approximation of bone broth for tan tan by mixing chicken bouillon and oatmilk or regular milk and add it to sesame and chili paste and make an incredible soup.

But yeah. Its kinda like everyone’s possible real world magic

It’s all about the chef’s skill. While good ingredients make dishes better, Good ingredients doesn’t offset bad cooking. A bad cook can fuck up anything.

Oh sure! You can totally mess something up terribly and it can steal parts of your life from you for doing the alchemy wrong. This is sorta aiming at the people that know how to perform at a basic level and up.

But honestly its also kinda alchemy to turn dinner into a charcoal briquette or a biological warfare item.

May thy liquid to solid by heat transmutation work in your favor.

Also make sure you through some veggies in there sautéd with some spices even if its just onion and garlic.
