I’ll preface this by saying I’m an American who hates Trump, his regime, and everything they stand for.

Every president has done some version of Venezuela and they always justify it with some Bs so I got to thinking what would I do in a situation where I was president and my intelligence community showed me proof that some dictator in a country that doesn’t really like us was creating nukes. Assuming you have all the correct information and it’s 100% true of course.

You can go around and around saying you need more info and all that. Let’s just assume they are building nukes and you know they will use it as leverage to harm your people economically or militarily

The same thing I do every time a hostile government, like the US, Russia, Israel, France, North Korea, etc gains nukes, nothing.

There are enough out there and I live within a target zone that there is no point in doing anything.

Nukes are entirely for posture. Everyone knows that once you turn that lever, there is no going back.

Their actions surrounding the telegram ceo, graphineOS, and letting war criminals fly unimpeded through their air space.

On 24 August 2024, Durov was arrested by French police on criminal charges relating to an alleged lack of content moderation on Telegram and refusal to work with police, which allegedly allowed the spread of criminal activities. --WP

Did they maybe have a point with that one?

…letting war criminals fly unimpeded through their air space.

I mean, the heads of state of the three most powerful nations in the world (plus various others) arguably hold that status, and collectively they must have flown over dozens of different nations. France may not exactly be heroic in that regard, but it’s a crowded field, far as I can tell.

You do know that countries only start producing nukes in order to fend off big external threats, right? Big external threats like Russia, China or USA

Let them. We are a country run by an extremist dictator with enough nukes to end the world multiple times over. Our historical adversary is a country run by an extremist dictator with enough nukes to end the world multiple times over. Our largest trading partner is an extremist dictator with enough nukes to end the world multiple times over.

As history has taught, having nukes is -apparently- one of the only ways to make imperialists hesitate when they have more power.

Slight correction: Two-party, first past the post democracy means that only 51% of the population decide which dumbass fucks the country while the other 49% effectively get zero say or representation in government.

Additional addendum: in the US with the electoral college, if you get the exact right people, you can theoretically win elections with about 23% of the popular vote, and the elected president had 51+% of the popular vote like…half the time lately

I mean, Trump barely even bothered to justify what they did in Venezuela. It’s pretty much completely naked imperialism.

The “they have nukes and are going to leverage them against us in some way” thing sounds more like the 2003-era justifications where they actually put some effort into it.

And what does “leverage against us” mean? If it just means that they use it to defy my country’s imperial ambitions, what I should do about that is to go fuck myself. But of course, someone who would actually go fuck themselves would never become their country’s president.

    Personally?

I doubt the government, military or intelligence agencies are going to be asking for my input.

Like North Korea? Trump has done nothing so far except shake the guy’s hands. That’s your answer.

He also saluted one of NK’s generals, which was a breach of protocol and overall rather uncharacteristic of him.

Based on the actions of my own government, the correct behaviour is to appease, play nice and hope he uses lube when he ultimately comes to f–k us.

I would understand that there is a massive difference between an unhinged crazy controlling weapons of mass destruction, and a tin pot tyrant who is simply hindering oil company profits.
