When Olympian Tess Howard put on her new uniform for Great Britain’s women’s field hockey team in 2021, she felt something she hadn’t expected at the height of her athletic career: embarrassment.
Bloody hell I thought it was a matter of “Girl ain’t wanna play with fit clothing” but no. For anyone too lazy to read that, clothes were literally constricting their movement and restricting breathing.
Other than that the “first woman to win in shorts” people talk about is about skort vs shorts which…I don’t get. Functionally the same, it seems, so where’s the problem in it?
But also all in all can we just go unisex on this shit, without crushing peoples organs?
Also girls feel overly sexualised. Well, we like to look at eye candy in sports, regardless of sex…but again, can we go unisex in clothing, with non-crushing design? Would solve a lot of problems.
Hmm, i don’t know how to feel about this one. On the one hand dress codes are important, but at the same time players shiyld be comfortable in what they wear.
I think a committee that includes players rather than bureacrats should be set up to address these issues
I’m a dude, but I’ll fight for every woman or girl in my life to live like they want to. If the school of my friends daughter tries something like this I’ll go there and start a fight. I’d do the same for their son, but I don’t have to because having a dick means you can wear comfy clothing.
Jesus, we should really have gotten to the real issues by now, it’s nearly 2026 and we humans still behave like idiots.
you mean controlling of women
More words to extrapolate meaning
I’m not against sexy outfits for women in sport, but it should be entirely up to the athlete what they wear. Seems like more often than not, such uniforms are mandatory rather than optional.
as long as what they are wearing does not give them an unfair advantage. Swimming for example has banned some specific materials because they are too good and expensive, which means pay to win
Exactly. Athletes should wear whatever they feel will best compliment their performance. The only requirement should be it carries the team colors and logos and their player number.
That’s kind of still an issue area then though. Like if the default uniform is a sexy one, then any girl asking for the modest one is seen as being a troublemaker or causing inconvenience maybe so she feels pressured to go with the flow.
Can’t keep everyone happy with everything all the time. Its up to the rest of the team to make people feel comfortable choosing between the two uniform types. If they don’t, then thats a shitty team.
I would’ve removed this post if I saw it earlier. It’s an interesting article (that surprisingly hasn’t been posted anywhere else yet) but it documents another problem in our society, not any sort of progress or resolution. I would remove, say, “The fight to release the double-tap boat strike video” even if we didn’t have the toxic politics rule.

sorry for being late, been away a lot lately. also the website just did not liek my setup (js/cache disabled, plus some more), had to start inprivate window.
getting to main topic - it is not a uplifting news from the title - but from the part - she became the first to sccore in shorts, which to my non sports term understanding ass sounds like skorts (or whatever those skin hugging clothing for respective sport is called) bad and shorts good, is uplifting. So definitely leave it up.
I watch cricket a lot (a bat and ball sport) - and you basically wear what you want - full/half sleaves, sweater or jacket or cap or hat - if it does not hinder your performance it does not matter.
I can see some sports where gear matters - swimming and running sports come to mind where viscous drag from water or air come in effect, and how your gear shapes and how vortex shedding happens and general graglines matter, so like running shoes, it becomes a requirement for performance, but beyond these sports, any clothing should work.
I do know that alot of women sports get viewing purely because a lot men get to see “hot women”, and that is definitely bad.
The successful fight is why I posted it here. Sorry to be so controversial with it.
no problem buddy, post freely. this is not controversial at all compared to what it used to be half or so year ago, it is like a fraction.
thanks for the post, i did hear something in these lines a year ago but did not know any details.
Where’s the article? All I see is links to other articles
What a dumb world we live in where this has to be an argument. These women are athletes; let them dress like it.
WTF is with the downvote? This is good news, women need to not be objectified just for playing a sport.
Because the article is trash. It doesn’t even load
Because how is this uplifting? It’s in the wrong community and should be actually be removed.
Im guessing that the fact that this is still an ongoing problem means it doesn’t really feel uplifting
It’s Lemmy. Someone always downvotes every post.
And little known fact, being Lemmy, you can actually see who downvoted what. I won’t list the URL here because of at least an attempt at privacy, but you can just check any post or comment for the exact user who downvoted it.
But really, who cares what the downvoting losers think. They’ll follow you around and tag you regardless.
Edit: lol yeah I asked for that :-P
What is the url?
Thanks
You can search it
E: Oh, right, I forgot Lemmy likes being spoon-fed even though it’s the top link when you look it up. My bad.
Obviously someone thinks women should be objectified
Women having to fight for this isn’t good news.
I completely agree.
Agree but also, it’s good news that they are not that they had to.
Also, why aren’t figure skaters wearing helmets? I don’t even get off the snow much on my board, but I wear a helmet.
It’s a sad but fairly common thing - men’s sports is for “looking at sports”, women’s sport is for “looking at athletes”. That’s not to say that male athletes aren’t also sexualized, but much less and at least there generally performance > looks. Also shows in which companies sponsor what.
Personally I don’t care for most sports, but yeah.
They are sexualized quite a lot it’s just not as obvious.
Bro’s never been to baseball night at a gay sports bar.
I like women’s volleyball. It’s genuinely better than men’s, it’s way more dynamic
I’m not going to lie about how my friends convinced me to go initially, but it’s one of the few sports I actually find interesting to watch
Genuine question but why are the women more dynamic? I don’t watch it or know much about the sport other than the surface level stuff
The men just move around less, their plays are tighter and more rehearsed looking, but I just don’t find that very interesting. I don’t really care if you can perfectly spike the ball to the optimal place every time and they can recover and do the same until someone messes up the sequence
But women’s volleyball is full of movement. It doesn’t look rehearsed, the teams look coordinated. They’ll pass the ball around while they prepare and then suddenly surge towards the net for a spike/to block the spike
The intensity ebbs and flows, and it’s unpredictable when it’s going to happen
Women’s game has longer ball rallies.

No downsides except the psychological toll on young woman being forced into embarrassing, impractical outfits on the global stage against their will in a world where the most powerful men have been secretly runing a pedophillic sex ring that traffics young girls?
I kind of hate the idea of uniforms anyways because they are dehumanizing to everyone, but sports is one of the places where it kind of makes sense. You are on a team and stuff.
I think women having cute outfits is a good thing and I think most women agree.
I think women having cute outfits is a good thing and I think most women agree.
You can’t possibly be this sexist and tone deaf. The entire article is about how this is not true and how people like you are ruining sports for girls. You are the problem and you seem intent on making sure everyone here knows it even though your original comment was removed for being so sexist.

Edited to remove quote, because they were banned
Wow, sexist, racist and Islamophobic all at once.
There are several women just in this thread telling you that being objectified while trying to compete in a sport is a problem. No one is saying that people can’t dress sexy when they want to, we’re saying it’s a problem when it’s forced on us and expected of us to comply
Yeah, I’m banning this user now.
Most women enjoy being beautiful, and there is no downside so long as people aren’t taking it to crazy lengths.
When the women you’re looking at are saying “I’m uncomfortable with this”, you’ve taken it too far
It’s not that hard buddy. They’re people, they can talk
Stating the obvious
But that’s exactly what’s happening here. The women in question are saying “I’m uncomfortable”
So now we don’t go “okay, but just make sure you stay fun to look at”
What we do is say “that’s not good, let’s give you agency over the situation so you can show off what you’re comfortable with”
The people who are uncomfortable should find a hobby that suits them better. (No pun intended)
The sport isn’t the problem.
Let me break this down real simple.
Everyone likes boobies. Literally all humans, even gay men and straight women, find them asthetically pleasing
The women bouncing around are complaining about their shirts. They don’t feel pretty, they feel creeped out
Don’t fucking drive them out… Are you insane? Let them pick their own shirts. They’re still going to want to look pretty. Stop making it weird
All you need to do is give them autonomy. That’s it. That would make it positive for everyone involved
there is no downside so long as people aren’t taking it to crazy lengths.
Like forcing them to wear overly tight revealing outfits and perform in front of thousands of people?
It kind of depends. What you said is very vague.
They force them to wear overly tight revealing outfits and perform in front of thousands of people.
The we seems like it just is you. They exist for your enjoyment?
Not just mine but everyone’s. I’m actually more on the demi/asexual side, but I do appreciate beauty, and people are beautiful. It’s not anything to be ashamed of. It’s actually a lot of work to be pretty. It’s something to be proud of. It makes everyone’s day better.

Just because I don’t agree with you, that doesn’t make me stupid, but making assumptions about people you don’t know anything about is really stupid.
I love when scumbags freely out themselves.
Women being beautiful is just one of those free goods that we get in our reality.
Like, that is messed up. Are you saying that women are just things to look at? Because that’s what it sounds like, yo.
For one thing there is an issue of agency, or control over their own appearance. Dressing up to look and feel pretty FOR THEMSELVES is a completely different thing from having an external force dictate their apparel. Let’s be real, that “external force” is probably mostly a bunch of old dudes.
Another issue, and this is a big one, sports isn’t about ogling hot bods! They are there to play sports. Athletes, especially Olympic ones, put immense work into training so they can excel at their sport of choice. They do not put all that work in just to become “eye candy” or anything of the sort.
They don’t do this to dudes anywhere near as bad. Imagine if the NBA uniform was crop tops and skin tight briefs or something. That can be comfortable, but in front of an arena and the whole world? Different story.

There are downsides. Not all women are beautiful, and quite a lot of us lose our beauty as we age. I can tell you first hand that aging has resulted in a significant change in how people treat me, and that alone is enough to cause social anxiety
Also, the expectation that we be beautiful or maintain our figures is oppressive as fuck. Think about how hard life is just trying to work and pay bills, then add the time and financial cost for beauty routines and gym. Some people get around that by making those two things their hobbies, but that isn’t gong to work for most people
Most women who play sports are young and also being skinny is healthy. It’s one of the strongest predictors of age. It’s true that not all women would want to wear the uniform but it’s not worth trying to include them because it ruins much of the appeal of it. They aren’t being forced to play and also people aren’t forced to change their style to placate the masses.
I’m not perfectly skinny but I have made big improvements. I eat pretty well and also I keep my weight lower. Often times it’s just habbits people have. There are certain foods you shouldn’t eat because they are not good. Healthy food is also delicious and you don’t have to eat massive amounts. I eat between 1-3 meals a day and I just keep my calories in mind.
Hey good news, I just found out how to block users \o/
