Diptyx is a new open-source e-reader now crowdfunding on Crowd Supply, positioning itself as a long-term alternative to locked-down commercial devices. Built around an ESP32 microcontroller and a distinctive dual-screen design, the device focuses on ownership, repairability, and offline reading without DRM or cloud dependencies.
The most striking aspect of Diptyx is its book-like form factor. Two 5.83-inch black-and-white e-ink displays are joined by a hinge, allowing the device to close like a physical book and protect the screens without requiring a case.
If this were a single screen device, I would’ve given it some serious thought. I’m reading one page at a time, so I don’t see the point of a dual screen e-reader. Single screen would be cheaper, and also lighter.
I guess I’ll stick with my Kobo for now.

Not a fan of the dual screen, but I am a big fam of open source ereaders. Options are currently limited. If any one of the FOSS book projects takes off, we’d all benefit a lot!
Why would I need two displays?
to feel more like an actual book probably
That’s like the worst part of an actual book to me. I’m only reading one page at a time. The second page is just kinda in the way until I get to it.
would be pretty cool if it opened up all the way around so as you rotate; the screen facing away advances to the next page. you just keep rotating to read!
Yes, that’s the official idea.
I myself would love a one-screen-half-price one tho.
But I am happy such projects exist, it’s the foss sphere that should be going mainstream & shape our culture, not monopolistic megacorps.
The open book is sorta what your looking for.
Yes, there are a few, but I meant like this one but with one screen.
I’d really love this if it can have two different books open at once, one on either screen.
The price is great, but the display looks pure black and white. I’d jump on it if at least had a few levels in between.
I wish it had magnetic sides with connector, and could work as one OR two devices.
