I think I found a rough barometer to measure how upbeat or relaxed a major city is.
Look at the speed of the information scrolling or changing on next stop displays in your modern subway or other transit vehicle. Changing quickly like #NYC is an upbeat city while slow scrolling like #Vancouver is a relaxed city.

It’s easier to hose down the stainless in both places. There’s a lot of piss and spilled coffee and rat shit that they don’t want in the cushions.
We have only old buses and trams with no information displays or announcements. We figure out where our stop is by either counting stops, following along on a navigation app, or looking out of the window to try to figure out where you are if you know the area well enough. So where would we fit in on this scale?
Looking out the window, Literal hell.
Not gonna say where I am for obvious reasons, but it’s relaxed enough on the busses where I live. The information changes not quickly, but not super slow either. Kinda middle of the road.
What about metro cars that have actual screens, e.g. in Berlin?
