I’m trying to figure out which multiplayer games have the broadest appeal. What game could get the most consistent buy in and is worth playing for at least a few hours?
I avoid using Steam as much as possible because it’s proprietary software that can be used as spyware and that tries to keep me dependent on their platform. My favourite Steam multiplayer game is Dota 2, I spend a hundred of hours playing it and I love it <3 Also Worms series it’s great if you’re looking for offline multiplayer, because you don’t need LAN or multiple controllers :)
I’ve been really into Yi Xian Pai. The pvp mode is a lot of fun, and challenging.
Guild Wars 2
And yes I believe it’s still worth getting into
It’s the only MMO I felt was good. Feels like a real game. No level or gear grind.
I didn’t do the latest expansion yet but I’ve done all the others.
None. First off, I wanna actually own my PC where with modern multiplayer titles, a shady game publisher would effectively take ownership of my PC and tell me what I can and can’t run on it via rootkit DRM, if I wanna rent my hardware, I’d rather just get a console, I wanna own my PC that I built, and not give up ownership to some shady game publisher; Riot or Activision or whoever didn’t build my PC, I did, and two, most multiplayer servers aren’t exactly the best place to kill time in terms of hostility.
Single-player by contrast, at least for now, generally doesn’t use rootkit DRM and so it can run on whatever I wanna run it on, and it’s just me against an enemy AI with no one calling me -insert assortment of slurs here- because I messed up in some way or because I outmatched them.
*No, kernel-level anticheats technically aren’t DRM, but they’re functionally rootkit DRM, so they count to me.
You … know most multiplayer games don’t use kernal level stuff right? And are also happy connecting peer 2 peer etc? You don’t have to play AAA slop fest PvP stuf!
Lately Arc Raiders has me hooked, but if youre trying to stay casual with your playtime it may frustrate you. Rocket League is a longtime standard for me too. I jump back into Helldivers2 every so often. Just depends on what hits the mood.
Huntdown, Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, Savage Planet, ARC Raiders, Sanctum 2
Path of Exile 2 is decent, especially if you have a buddy to level up with.
DOTA2
Does Rocket League count?
Only if you get them quick chatting.
We play a lot of couch coöp at our house:
- Spelunky (1&2)
- Moving Out (1&2)
- Pikmin 3
- River City Girls (1&2)
- Super Mario (World, Wonder)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Stardew Valley
anything that has co-op abilities, and where I don’t need to play with randoms. private co-op/single player games. genre doesn’t matter, just be fun.
Depends on what games you enjoy the most…
Certainly not of broad appeal, but I’m currently playing Nightreign. I think it’s worth it if you enjoy soulslikes.
You’re about to find me as insufferable as a Souls fan.
I can’t stand Souls-likes. It’s the opposite of joy in gaming.
Helldivers 2
I wanna try arc raiders, but I don’t have the time to invest in it
d&d :)
I really enjoyed playing Split Fiction, It takes two & A way out.
2 player co-op, only one person needs to buy the games (free friend pass available). I’ve played them all multiple times with different friends and we always had a blast.
A Way Out was the weakest of the bunch but it was also their first. That studio is absolutely rocking couch coop.
