My car is almost old enough to drink, and my phone’s a $300 sunbeam phone which feels expensive to me (although I know that’s “cheap” compared to the new iPhones and whatnot)

Could easily afford a new car and a thousand dollar phone, but… why would I, when what I have works perfectly fine?

FYI, might get better answers if you don’t ask questions with an obvious goal in mind. Are you trying to learn about others situations or are you trying to shit on people for their choices?

I don’t care about what you call better answers. I’m asking a question and I want answers. It doesn’t matter if they’re dumb or intellectual. If anyone has offended, they need to get offended with the economy. Second part is you have no idea why I’m asking the question. If the question is applicable to someone answering, then maybe it will give them reflection time to think about why they have these things during an economic hardship. Giving them time to reevaluate their priorities. Or they could moan and groan and stay in their impoverished circumstance.

Looking at your online history (nanobots in COVID shots? really?) I’m gonna go ahead and let you win this one, you clearly need to feel special much more than any of us do. So, good job! Your opinion is definitely important enough to make people rethink their priorities! Society would be in shambles without you and your guidance!

I’ve been unemployed for nearly six months and were it not for my amazingly generous girlfriend I’d be homeless.

So, the status of one’s car or celphone payments often have little to do with whether one is or is not struggling financially.

ETA: One cannot assume that another is “doing fine” by those metrics alone. It’s actually insulting because I am very much not “fine”, nor are many people around the globe.

The point isn’t to equate cars or phones with economic status or how well you’re doing financially. It is to illustrate to the people who may be struggling if they have a newer model car or cell phone that they need to get rid of those things because they cannot afford them financially. It may be it may alleviate some of their problems with finances. if they spend within their bracket and not overspend or consumerism.

    Nope

Also there is a massive difference between a few dozen thousand dollars, and just one thousand.

I have a (refurbished) namebrand phone but I’m not struggling financially. I worked damn hard and got damn lucky to get to this point, though.

Edit: Not driving a car is part of why I’m solvent, though. Those bastards are expensive.

Total expenses for my almost 20 year old truck are around 300€/month. While not cheap, it’s not that expensive either. Housing and food are by far the biggest expense categories for me.

If I owned a car outright, and never drove it, I would still be paying about $1500/yr in insurance and parking fees. Add in gas, maintenance, and the actual cost to buy and I couldn’t afford it.

Good thing I don’t need it.

As of a couple of months ago, sort of. I have a Google Pixel 8 and only recently got a reasonably well-compensated job. I got the phone in 2023, shortly before I was laid off, and it was on a fire sale in anticipation of the Pixel 9 release, so I’m only paying $4/month for it, $100 total plus the $70 up front.

My car is a 2007 model year that I could only afford because it was in an accident previously, though.

nope. Although if I was not struggling I would likely be discussing cars with my wife as ours is 10 years old.
