Eh, I’ve lived in plenty of poor neighborhoods. The lotto tickets basically coat the gas station parking lot like a paper mache.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•is it unethical to buy off brand but compatible batteries for power tools?
7·2 months agoThe manufacturers of those off brand batteries are unethical because they almost always use inferior cells and less robust protection circuits, and in many cases have less than advertised capacity.

20·3 months agoThis is terrible advice. They can and will track you down. Only way this might be viable is if everyone turns off their transmissions and the transmitter changes location constantly or is deployed via drone sporadically.

431·3 months agoThis conversation is a waste of time no matter how much of a nazi Elon is.
This is what the sky would be like in the majority of science fiction. If you want space exploration, there will be space infrastructure, and as time goes on that infrastructure will increase both in amount and size, not to mention the traffic to and from.
It is like complaining about the clutter of the marina while wanting to explore the ocean.

Technology@lemmy.ml•An open source, off-grid, decentralized mesh network built to run on affordable, low-power devices. No cell towers. No internet. Just pure peer-to-peer connectivity.
3·4 months agoThe furthest node I can reliably hit on Meshtastic is about 60 miles from me. Sporadically there’s a node I see 110 miles away.
With Meshcore I can sporadically hit something 300 miles away, but locally isn’t reliable because the density isn’t as good in my area. Too many dead spots.
Ultimately I’m going to use both, but I’m not putting up any meshcore infrastructure because it’s not FOSS and Meshtastic has more inertia here.
Buy two devices and flash both. See what your locals are doing.

7·4 months agoI’ve tried both side by side, ultimately you can tune out Meshtastic to cover a metro area pretty well. Mesh core is better at linking regions together, but ultimately it’s not fully open source. Like you gotta buy some firmwares.
My local area, and many others have active contributors to Meshtastic apps and firmware, I feel more comfort in that than reaching people in the next state over.
Once upon a time I felt guilty and didn’t apply to a government assistance within the required window.
I almost lost everything.
Always apply and take everything they will give you.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What desktop operating system would you recommend to the average user?
6·5 months agoThe other thing that keeps Apple in business is tech companies not wanting to fuck around with windows or Linux laptops. Linux systems run the world and MacOS is just plain better when it comes to interacting with those systems while also serving as a good user-facing operating system.
And before anyone says WSL, I was forced to use WSL for an engagement and anyone who tells you it’s viable is a lying or a Stockholm syndrome sufferer.

I grew up poor and around poor people in poor neighborhoods. It’s what the poor do. You wanna argue about improving their lot, sure, but half the mothers in my neighborhood would sell anything they could for a hit of hope or faux luxury. My own mother stole from me.
