Every time I post a comment, invariably within a few seconds I read over it real quick and realize I should add a word or change something. Every damn time. No more ninja editing for me. Everyone can see how I overthink everything now. It’s no longer a secret.
I think it’s ok because it now says when it was edited, so you can tell, mostly, if it was before or after a comment
But yeah I kinda miss ninja edit
That’s just how the Fediverse works. Even if all the Lemmy frontends would hide the edits, the individual servers still receive every update. It wouldn’t even be that hard for someone to set up a system where you could watch the edit entire history of every comment and post.
Just own the edits. Does it really matter if you edit the contents of your comment before or after you hit send? If you’re quick, nobody is going to notice the difference anyway.
It would take me 45 minutes to write what you just wrote.
On the one hand I agree. On the other hand it has occurred to me that someone could make another user look bad by making a statement and then editing that statement after a reply to make the reply-er seem like they are unduly criticizing, or moving goal posts, or outright just bullying because the original post was edited after the second comment was made.
I make typos all the time and most of my posts are edited. I fat finger so much stuff. But it’s better this way.
I’m not sure how that could happen with a “ninja” edit though - places that have ninja edits only give you a minute or two after the original submission to make a silent edit, hence the “ninja” moniker.
I think it’s still theoretically possibly but probably not on purpose. That being said I didn’t understand that distinction before when I made my original comment.

Can we just remove “edited” from the UI if the edit was within X minutes of the original post?
Would be great if an app had a delayed send.
