For the sake of starting some discussion around here, I’m a week 1 kickstarter backer who is still in love with this project AMA.

Rock on, man… I backed in early 2014, and it’s honestly been such a wild ride throughout that time! Space Games have come and gone since then, and I’ve enjoyed my time with each and all of them, but nothing’s held my interest quite like Star Citizen.

Even the janky fun present in the game right now blows most of the competition out of the water, for me personally. And the weekly videos into the development process (Jarod’s the best!) are insightful and honestly enjoyable in and of themselves…

But it’s absolutely not for everyone! But if people are honest with themselves I think they’ll realize there’s a reason people are dumping money into a project like this: it’s got tons of promise, and there’s quite a bit to show for it even now :)

How much depth and variety of gameplay is there? I loved Eve while I played it and was super excited for Dual Universe. Or is it more similar to something like Elden Ring with an open world but somewhat specific story arc?

Additional questions if you don’t mind: Is pvp available, optional, or mandatory?is there an obvious “meta” or is there a balanced variety?

      How is currency generated?

Are there groups/orgs to join? Are they player made?

There are plenty of things to do, such as bounty hunting missions (player or ai), cargo hauling, medic, mining, transport, exploration. You can make money doing most of these, either through missions, or by buying/selling commodities, among other things. There are certain ships that are better for some things than others. It’s a completely open world(universe). You can hop in your ship and fly down to a planet, get out anywhere you want, walk around, steal another ship, etc.

Pvp is definitely available, and you’ll need to be clever to avoid it if it’s not your thing. Major POIs like cities will have an armistice zone where you are not allowed to PVP, and space stations will have defense systems built in for anyone getting rowdy. But there are plenty of other areas that are great for PVP without such barriers as well.

The greatest thing about Star Citizen is the community. If you hop into an instance and start asking questions, people will help you, show you around, pick you up in their ship if you are stranded, maybe invite you to their player org. As far as the game itself, It really is an experience like no other. Yes there are plenty of bugs, but it has come a long way over the years

I tried the game about 3 years back and it was a glitch filled mess. How are you finding it now?

As a very early backer (2015), I still come back to the game once a year hoping that it is finally in a playable state, only to leave disappointed.

My current rig of an i7/3080ti/32gbRAM/NVMe had issues with walking around the station with a decent frame rate; after spending 20 minutes of trying to get my ship out of storage (not going to list the countless bugs there), I finally took off and was excited to leave orbit and fly around space…

Unfortunately my ship had another idea; it clipped me out of the captains seat and into high orbit; my ship kept flying its trajectory, while I slowly tumbled back into the planets gravity.

I hope that by 2035 we might see a stable beta release.

I’ll bite. I played through and was very impressed with the ship interiors and how it all worked. That said, I felt that it suffered a similar issue to Elite Dangerous by the way of being “a mile wide but an inch deep”. I loved the vast amount of systems you can go to in Elite but the lack of ship interiors seriously sucks. In SC we have seemingly the opposite, a few small brilliantly fleshed out locations and wonderful ships…and not many places to go.

Seriously, how do you rationalize that the amount of money raised produced worthwhile content?

I think people are so hungry or desperate for what Star Citizen is promising they are literally willing it into existence via crowd funding. It’s the type of game I’ve dreamt about since I was very young. I remember playing space games back in the 90s and asking myself “wouldn’t it be cool if you could fly your ship to a space station and get out and walk around?”. Well here is my chance to help make that dream a reality. There’s just no way something like this gets made going through the traditional game development process, where publishers would rather ship a sequel every year instead of taking risks.
