It’s ridiculous that Google has disabled this feature. Even if we assumr it’s in preparation for desktop mode, that’s still unacceptable. Mirroring is a perfectly valid feature in its own right and it shouldn’t be held back by Google’s “plans”.

It’s crazy that my old Android phones from a decade ago could do this and the latest pixel cannot. We have been bleeding hardware features for years.

It’s because they want to lock you into Chromecast compatible apps.

The same reason they removed the SD card, to get you using Google Drive, and the headphone jack, to get you to buy pixel buds.

I wish there were other options but most smartphone makers have dropped out of the game, cost a fortune, or have terrible updates.

Yeah, I’m at a loss for my next phone. Maybe OnePlus if they stay decent.

In any case, display output works, and enabling it is as simple as running a shell command (after rooting the device):

If the hardware actually has this capability, why lock it behind root, which practically disable display output feature for almost all users?

Wait this is news? My Pixel 2 supported it years ago. Are you telling me that they disabled it the last few years… these bastards!

it never did. That was display link which isn’t proper display out. its literally a wired-up version of Chromecast.

It was literally screen mirroring. I remember using this with a nexus iirc. Whatever was on the phone screen was on the bigger display.

It wasn’t exactly chrome cast as with cast it doesn’t play the same video locally.

I really hope this will let my AR glasses work. I was bummed they didn’t work with my Pixel 6 Pro, and half the reason I went for an 8 Pro were the initial display out support news from July.

When this workaround was reported to not work, I was pretty bummed, but this seems like a good sign. I’ll be building my own ROM anyway, so I can easily set this property enabled by default with no need for root.
