I would have loved a North American Union with free trade, freedom of movement, and shared currency between Canada, the US, and Mexico, maybe even Cuba as well if it didn’t infringe on their communism. But that was a dream from a more naive time when we could’ve been better neighbors.

These days it’s enough to demand that our borders and healthcare costs don’t increase. No new wars, no new territories, and we need to let Puerto Rico choose between statehood and independence.

Puerto Rico can’t currently choose between statehood, continued territory status, or freedom. Not because they don’t have agency, but because there’s no consensus among Puerto Ricans. There are advantages and disadvantages for all three options. As I’m not Puerto Rican, I don’t have a say in the debate.

Same with DC. Practically everyone there wants statehood, the license plates have “no taxation without representation” as a protest even, but Congress kills it every time it comes up.

The reason they are not a state has to do entirely with racism. Hell, they were actively sterilizing Puerto Rican women up to the 70’s to try and stop them from having so many brown babies
