I have seen folks talk about a pain point for using FF (or forks) being related to YouTube being super slow. The about:config settings the article mentions did seem to lead to YouTube loading faster on both my FF and Zen-Browser installs. So maybe this might help for others that specifically don’t like to use FF as their main browser because of YouTube.
For those that just want the settings:
gfx.webrender.compositor.force-enabled (set to true and restart FF)
If on AMD GPU, this extra setting is supposed to help reduce CPU usage:
media.wmf.zero-copy-nv12-textures-force-enabled (set to true and restart FF)
media.wmf.zero-copy-nv12-textures-force-enabled
This option is Windows-specific.
but it still works. i tried setting it just now and the video loads immediately now, but interestingly, the rest of the youtube contents still takes a second to load. before it also took a second for the video to load; not enough to make me stop using it, but it was noticeable.
Welcome to the monopolization of the internet. And blatant anti-competative practices.
Huge operators like Google can intentionally make their sites and services a worse experience for other browser users.
it’s like the netscape thing all over again.
Is this about the adblock delay, or some actual performance issue?
AFAIK the webrender compositor is forcibly disabled on Linux regardless of that setting, which you can see in about:support. (Even then, it only works on Wayland)
Another tip is the YouTube mobile extension. It hides the shorts and is a lot faster than even chrome, but some people might not like it like that. If on a linux tablet just use this link.
To revert to desktop, use this link.
Edit: On ironfox this worked, on librewolf on an intel tablet this made it go like 10 fps.
One nice deleted comment this is!
