    Yes, it was one of the more contreversial changes he did. Before, you had to be “vetted” by xitter staff as being both notable and who you said you were. That wasn’t a great system, and was effectively a nepotism/who you knew game, but you wouldn’t see blue checkmarks for fake accounts.

    It used to be a sign of trustworthiness.

    Now anyone can get one for a monthly fee.

      what I find shocking is that the website still exists and has so many users; I even know a user IRL who hasn’t noticed it has gotten any worse since Elon took over …

      Before, you had to be “vetted” by xitter staff as being both notable and who you said you were.

      This made me think of an easy-ish way to do it for the fediverse:

      1. You must have a Wikidata page, with at least one Wikipedia page associated with that Wikidata page
      2. On the Wikidata page, you must have a P4033 property with that account
      3. Add some ActivityPub metadata for “Account owner’s Wikidata Item”
      4. When there’s a two way correspondance (Fediverse Account <-> Wikidata entry), show a Wikipedia logo which brings you to the corresponding Wikipedia article about the person.
