So I get that the GOP has to remove these “illegal immigrants.” But it looks like they’re just putting them on airplanes? Are there like Uhaul trucks for all their stuff following them? Does their family members keep it? What if they don’t have any family?
I know when we were rounding up the Japaneses that a bunch of non Japanese folks stepped in to take their stuff.
Like okay I’m not supposed to live here but I still own this house and car. Plus my I just paid the Netflix subscription. Maybe I have a family I like so I have some photos of them that aren’t on my phone because I’ve lived here for a long time before all the pictures went on the phones some are even polaroids. Do you get to bring your ATM card? What if they charge really high international fees?
The cruelty is the point. They’re doing this to intimidate people and they enjoy the suffering they’re causing.
No they don’t, but they try really hard to enjoy it, and since it’s physically impossible to do that and always will be, it warps them instead.
Why does the GOP need to remove the “illegal imigrants”? They are often hardworking individuals with similar or lower crime rates than the average american. What the GOP and ICE are doing right now is illigal and akin to human trafficking. From the outside looking to the US it looks more and more like they are treating immigrants as germany treated the jews at the start of the second world war.
They don’t ”have to”, they know it’s not gonna fix anything. Strategically, it’s perfect though: it only increases instability and makes the economy worse, which in turn is just further going to fuel authoritarianism.
Most authoritarian regimes consolidate power through improving the economy and high approval don’t they? I thought the collapse tends to come later after the consolatio and I hadn’t seen it argued as a strategic thing. Any chance you can point to something that discusses this more fully?
I think ICE main purpose right now is to normalize kidnapings, overreach and military presence. Eventually they will serve as Trumps private army. Spending will increase to accomplish this. Same blueprint Putin uses to stay in power.
They don’t even think about that.
If they thought they could get away with shooting brown people and liberals in the streets, they would be.
They’re still working up to it, while the opposition leadership sits on their hands and whimpers, for the most part.
If I am hearing what you are saying it sounds like they don’t see these immigrants, minorities, or non-whites as people. Like they think they are subhumans and don’t deserve the same rights as humans. I hope that isn’t the case.
I can’t know for sure but I think it’s a safe bet that you lose everything you can’t get friends and family to rescue. There is some logic to this beyond cruelty, the US government is cruel to be sure but this is not just for extra cruelty. The extra cruelty is a bonus!
So just to frame this, if you commit a crime and are wanted by the police. They hunt you down and arrest you. Do you get to bring your stuff? No. Do you lose it? Also no. …Unless you don’t have a home in which case it’s considered litter and removed, throwing all the blankets, tent, and any knick knacks you might have acquired into the landfill. There’s a story about this happening to the ashes of a man who’s widow had become homeless. Just heartbreaking stuff and it feels like the point is to break people down… But that’s editorializing.
We are supposed to have a cool thing called Due Process in this country. That is the process of law, searching for facts and going through a fair and unbiased review from someone taught to be good at reviewing things, a judge if you will. And you should because that job is titled judge.
Anyway, that judge overseas a process in which you are told what you are accused of and given the space and time to defend yourself. People aren’t guilty, they are found guilty by systematically laying out all the evidence and facts. This process usually takes a fair amount of time and many people are allowed to return home during this time. Usually on Bail. We can argue the merits of bail but basically you pay a decent chunk of money and you get to go home with a promise to show up for your court date.
Now while doing court stuff you also have to find time to plan for your stuff or money for fines or whatever comes next.
Anyway, all this stuff doesn’t matter because ICE, DHS, the Trump admin. they don’t work like that. They are supposed to. The law says they must do it that way. They are not. If you get abducted (detained is the word they will use but without due process your not being detained.) by federal agents right now I would expect to lose everything, maybe not right away but quickly enough unless you can get friends and family to help.
This is because of government has revoked three right of due process for people it deems “illegal.” This is crazy because how do you prove whether you are legally allowed to be somewhere if there is no process for showing your documents? Like I could show you my driver’s license, my passport, but if no one verifies them, and there is no process to make sure I get released once they are verified…you can see the problem right?
Anyway, once you’re in their custody they want to deport you, period. Wife at home? Kids to feed? Pets that rely on you? Work and friends wondering where you went? Doesn’t matter to these people. They just want you give and will try to do it asap. You can try to fight it but there few stories of it being successful. Those that are successful take months and months of work and money. Most people however just can’t do that. You file a petition or two and get the boot anyway.
So much like the Japanese Internment during WWII much of the stuff not saved by friends and relatives will be repossessed, stolen, and eventually thrown away. Cars and homes will be sold and if these people ever get to return to their families everything in their lives will be different and they and their families will be much poorer for it.
In my opinion, it’s kind of like we all have paid taxes so the government can take the dreams of hopeful immigrants looking for a better future for themselves and their families and smash it on the ground before grinding it to dust beneath jack booted heels. But maybe someone else has a different take.

GOP are not exactly well-known for such deep questions.
They generally don’t get to take it with them unless they are carrying it at the time, and other people will definitely step in to take their stuff eventually. Maybe the government, maybe the family, maybe opportunists. But this doesn’t usually happen right away.
Some stuff is explicitly seized at the time of arrest, there is a complex and opaque system of laws built around this. Some of it is seized as evidence. Some of that may be returned eventually, but usually not for a very long time, and much of it won’t be. Other procedures are used to seize things that seem valuable, originally intended to seize things that were actually criminal in nature or the product of crime. All of the details vary in different jurisdictions. Look up “Civil asset forfeiture” for more information. But not everything is seized. Lots of stuff is simply not interesting or valuable or there’s no legal justification to take it, so it’s just left behind. Often, the stuff just sits there, unused, empty, untouched. Technically it is still “theirs” even though “they” are gone. After all, they could yet be found innocent.
But possession, as always, is 9/10ths of the law. If the person’s family is still living there and takes it, nobody’s policing that or even disputing it. If someone else takes it, there’s probably nobody to complain.
Meanwhile, any fees or debts that are due are still due, even if nobody’s around to pay them. Nobody’s going to give the guy a break from his financial obligations just because he got arrested or deported. Your accounts were frozen? Oh that’s too bad, you’re still obligated to find a way to pay. Then we start seeing the people this money is “owed” to start to repossess things. It often only takes a missed payment or two and bam, it’s gone. Mortgage? House belongs to the bank now. Unpaid taxes or registration fees? Government will helpfully sell it for you to pay any fees, all sorted out now you’re welcome.
Like @[email protected] says, the cruelty is the point. Your losses of possessions are an unofficial part of your punishment, and the great part is many of them still happen whether you’re found innocent or guilty. It’s a convenient way of punishing people who are completely innocent along with those who aren’t quite guilty enough to be found guilty.
