Tim Schafer, CEO of Double Fine Productions, confirms that the developer is not working on the third installment of Psychonauts, but on smaller games that will explore new styles.

It’s good for them to branch out. I found the studio to be hit and miss for my taste, but loved Psychonauts 2. Broken Age, in contrast, I found boring. I hope they lean into action on their new projects.

I’m ok with this. Psychonauts is the kind of series that only works if it doesn’t become serialized. It’s just too unique and quirky.

The world is so rich and has a ton of potential though. But I’d actually be really happy with a tv show instead. Alternatively maybe DLC with short stories that deal with only 1 or two minds at a time. I think the big story of 2 was wrapped up so well I don’t really want a follow up to the main story.

Actually kind of glad for this. While Psychonauts 2 was a very unexpected and personally enjoyed sequel, I feel like Double Fine has always done its best work when trying to do something original and different.
