      @[email protected] is right in that there are for-profit blood plasma donation companies in the US. They use machines to separate plasma from blood, pump it back in without the plasma, give chump change to the (usually financially desperate) “donors”, and then sell the plasma to laboratories for research and experiments.

      Not that I know of, but it’s not done by any government entity, so I think that’s why they put it that way.

      I think there’s for-profit plasma donation though. Or at least people can get money from it.

        As I understand it, here in Florida you can sell plasma and you can donate blood or platelets. Blood donation places are not allowed to pay you for donating, but they are allowed to give you gifts like a gift card or t-shirt. I donate frequently at OneBlood (I literally hit 20 gallons this past Saturday!) and them being hacked is sickening.

          Yeah, they always offer me some sort of tchotchke when I donate blood here, but I just tell them no thanks most of the time.
