What I fucking hate is this pattern of attacks on open source and self-hosting we’ve been seeing. Anthropic’s CEO saying that open source self-hosted LLMs are “dangerous” for example.

I’ve been a Mullvad user for probably about a year but I’m considering Nym.

Editing for further context: their board includes Chelsea Manning which bodes well, I like that they use decentralized nodes, and that all of their code is open for review. The $NYM stuff is a little weird, but to me it comes off like an attempt to decentralize currency, which can anonymize in its own way (with an asterisk). Just not sure what that landscape looks like, since a person’s identity can often be figured out by looking at the public ledger. I’m still learning about Nym though.

I think my main criticism of it all is that we’re still leaving the reigns in the hands of politicians and organizations. We sit back and wait for moneyed orgs to do the work, when it really needs to be worker-lead. But at the same time it’s also nice to see Mamdani knocking things out that no prior mayor bothered to do. It’s sad how low the bar is in Amerika.

I don’t know why we can’t at least acknowledge a smidge of progress in a good direction, even if it’s not a full on revolution like we should’ve had years ago. People are addicted to the negativity involved in shooting everything down because it doesn’t meet their manufactured expectations.

Windows: constantly having to apply patches and run tools to combat the privacy violations.

Linux: install once, run updates regularly, never have to worry about the constant privacy issues.

I appreciate that those tools exist for de-bloating Windows, but that sounds like a giant pain in the ass.

This is a rough one. Accessibility is severely lacking in so many tools and interfaces.

I have to use those tools for work (more so in the past), but I’m on macOS for that stuff. That’s a cost-prohibitive layer though. There’s AffinityOnLinux, but I’ve never used it myself. Raster and vector editing are areas have been sadly devoid of comparable software on the Linux side.

I’m sure I’m overestimating and I don’t care. The majority will keep using malware and complaining about it, while doing nothing to solve it. Not even the bare minimum of searching “what are my alternatives?” I know there’s a massive slice of the population that will live in PC hell until the bitter end.

There is zero reason to use Windows now. Linux has gotten so good that even a noob can install distros like Ubuntu and Mint. I have Linux running as my main on an old Zephyrus laptop after it arbitrarily installed W11 without my permission or prompting. Windows is spyware and gets isolated in my network.

Your comment sounds like it’s suggesting the inverse of what is true (AI data is free, but search engine results are paywalled). Google is “free” but they just float their shitty sponsored links to the top. AI can’t be used at all unless you have a subscription. Sure, you can run your own models locally, but now you’re offloading costs to needing good hardware (during a time when AI has also destroyed the GPU industry for all of us that want to build PCs).

Yeah, you’re not required to sit there and be talked at like a child. That kind of behavior makes me shutdown 100%. When I was a kid and adults resorted to yelling, I just assumed they were inept at communicating and tuned them out. It carried over into adulthood too. If a manager acted that way, I walked out and quit (I’ve done it twice in my life now). It’s similar to police in America expecting respect simply because they have a badge. Respect is earned.

All of this entitlement and inability to communicate with respect is unique to 2 countries: America and Israel. Both are places that have drilled exceptionalism into their core values. I’ve yet to see other countries behave this way. A good litmus test for this is to use Rednote for a few months. Join chat groups, post about yourself and your country, engage with people. Your experience there will be 10x different than on Instagram. People on Facebook and Instagram will quickly resort to talking shit and being abrasive. On Rednote, the experience is completely different.

The entitled American (and I’m an American myself). My country has fostered mentalities and behaviors that I can’t stand. We act like the planet owes us everything. Obviously not everyone is like this, but America has a unique brand of entitlement that I’ve witnessed pour out of both right-wingers and even the most leftist people. I witnessed a local well-known white pro-Palestine activist refuse to participate in a march for the black community because police were present. They didn’t stop to think “this is lead by and represents them—I should stay to support their actions.”
