mountainRadish@lemmy.worldOPtodatahoarder@lemmy.ml•I think Sony's Optical Disc Archive cartridge is the best consumer digital storage solution
1·8 days agonot because of the hardware.
The main cost is the hardware you could have open source NAS OS’s
The thing you read about optical discs is not about HTL inorganic blurays
You read about CD’s which uses an organize layer for the data.
Inorganic HTL blurays lasts 50+ years, and can be stored in room temperature and at high humidity.
About the box, those sleeves are not.designed for archival disc archival storage boxes protect blurays from scratches
And sony Archival Discs are inside a cartridge protected from scratches

12·11 days agoI think NAS is great for techies but optica disc storage is better option for family memories and stuff.
A NAS need maintenance and can get expensive.
LTO tape take a lot of care, I just read about it again.
It needs proper storage and maintenace and even then it last for 30 years.
Optical media last 50+ years and storage conditions is just normal home climate. I think for childhood memories, important documents, wedding videos is a perfect medium.
mountainRadish@lemmy.worldOPtodatahoarder@lemmy.ml•I think Sony's Optical Disc Archive cartridge is the best consumer digital storage solution
11·11 days agoBecause I believe for home use optical disc in a cartridge is easier.
*I might be wrong, but I remember LTO tape must be stored at certain RH and condition.
And they last for 30 years, maybe
And VHS tapes. Ade the idea of a tape around a spool feeels like it is not as robust as a disc.
Having said that, iffff consumer version of lto tape drives was out there it would be as cool.
But I still feel discs are more safer.
You see, I could salvage archival optical disc if I got flooded or if they went through extreme temperature.

11·11 days agoLTO is too complicated for someone like me.
Obtaining used drive is the only choice and it is still expensive… I think.
And magentic tape can store more.dafa but I think a cartridge with several optical disk is way more reliable because the data don’t habe to move around a spool or something.
My last console 😢

52·14 days agoI am not sure what your comments mean. I am in tremendous back pain. And didn’t sleep For so long, and the fucking humidity.
I want to add more. And vent.
I am old enough and I saw similar actions, and the out come of it.
Slwoly we are forced to use ESIMS, where I live, I have to pay every time I switch phones.
And if I am outside of the country, I can’t even switch phones.
I love the idea of esims, but not how it is implemented.
Digiral data produced by me is so.expensive to keep.
It is the digital age, but not a digital .storage age, it is cheaper to print shit.
Optical storage can store terabytes of data, easy to maintain, you can design a device where the hdd store meta data and anyone from your family cam access the data stored on archival optical drives.
It is not built because they want us to use the cloud. Maybe it is greed, control, surveillance.
I just want a simple cartridge that can store my data for decads and technologically that is easily done. There are already archival optical storage sold to data centers, but why not to small businesses or consumers!?!?
It is basically several bluray discs in a cartridge.
The future is dark because of human nature.
And we will do nothing about because look at state of printers. The ink cost more than gold per gram
Look at air purifiers all proprietary filters that are over priced
And yes I know about CR boxes but those furnace filters are only sold in USA.
We are not good creatures
Sorry, I am coherent enough to know I am not coherent, I needed to vent.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What does "upgrade you from tagged to blocked" means?
1·19 days agoI didn’t do that but my sense of humor and behavior might be the cause.
Mods, governments, and social media expect all to be the same. Like robots. It ruined the experience for me.
Would you share their account, I want fo study it.
