All the marketing of VPNs over the last five years has really confused people as to what they are good for.

“Makes you private”? Private against what exactly? Does that mitigation match my threat model and use case? But that doesn’t fit into a fifteen second YouTube ad bit, and most people don’t do any further research.

  • They really do only have themselves and their patrons to blame.

The extra military funding was an accounting trick, that €100B isn’t part of the budget somehow. It’s extra external special money, cause there’s always money for war. When social services need money there never is any, as usual.

The irony is that the Bundeswehr is in such bad shape that this €100B won’t bring them back to anything close to resembling combat readiness. Whereas €100B would go a long way to helping the most vulnerable German residents.

  • What would you call over a million people fleeing their homes, while the government of the land they live on is shelling those very homes and passing legislation to make their very existence impossible? What would you call parents fleeing with their children in a desperate attempt to keep them safe? Would it be acceptable to leave orphans in an orphanage with artillery shells dropping all around and fire fights happening just down the street? Would you be alright with parents deciding to stay in their war torn village just so that they don’t cross a border in to what you’ve determined as enemy territory? What would you call a violent terror campaign over a decade long being waged against millions of people just because of the langauge they speak and the area they come from?

  • Ten years ago it was “unfortunately we have to infringe on your civil rights due to terrorism.” That excuse has since been overused and isn’t as blindly accepted anymore, so clever politicians and their bourgeoisie patrons have moved on to “unfortunately we have to infringe on your civil rights to save the children.” It’s the same excuse behind the EU wide proposal to effectively neuter encryption in communications services, and it’s absolutely bullshit. Law enforcement agencies already have the capability to investigate and stop the vast majority of child sexual exploitation, but they don’t get the resources required nor the priority. A healthy society would likely take care of whatever would slip through the cracks. Breaking encryption or free access of information does absolutely nothing to stop this behaviour, and in some ways would put children in an even more dangerous position.

Tldr: this is about controlling the plebs, not about protecting children.

  • That’s actually not what I meant but is a consideration. What I meant is that it is very problematic that the US DoD has control of a communications system which is being marketed both to individual people in various parts of the world, as well as comprador governments. It’s also very concerning that so many of these satellites are being launched and clogging up low earth orbit. Not to mention the intelligence concerns of states whose interests are not aligned with those of the US military and intelligence apparatus. There are also pollution concerns on earth what with a stack of these being launched every week or so and the fact that even when SpaceX are ostensibly done with the buildout they’ll have to keep replacing older satellites. Overall it’s a project which needs to be met with much more criticism, which it is outside of the cheerleading western media.

  • It’s nothing new, it’s just bringing the neo-colonial instruments of the Breton Woods institutions into the 21st century.

If we want to talk about genuinely new financial systems we can look at BRICS+, Shanghai Cooperation Agreement, the multitude of bilateral currency swap agreements, and regional currency swap blocs.

Dedollarization and multipolarity are coming and they’re coming hard. The G7 are simply scrambling for any possible way to maintain their imperialist arrangements, but it’s not going to work.
