  • As someone periodically into genealogy, I would love to see the everyday life of my ancestors, how their material conditions and lifestyle changed over the centuries.

    Occasionally it blows my mind to think about that my ancestors lived through all those historical eras I learned about. They were always there, going about their life somewhere while the large events happened around/elsewhere.

    Also on the flip side, when looking at some Roman ruins in Budapest the other day, that those stones really have been there for ~1900 years. Like just imagining medieval/Renaissance people living around them, what did they think of them? I usually think of history as distinct periods, but (at least in Europe) people of most eras lived in/on the works of earlier civilisations.
