  • I’m gonna add to this by saying phosphorus may be my favorite, but I think the most likely filter is just time, twice.

Do you know how unlikely it is that earth has been habitable for so long? Do you know how long life was single-celled? One of the theories for how advanced (eukaryotic) cells formed was the combination of at least three different branches of life into the same cell! Archaea (cell wall), bacteria (mitochondria/chloroplasts), and viruses (nucleus). Do you know how unlikely that sounds? Do you know how long it would take for that to happen randomly? Most planets probably aren’t even habitable for that long. Once we became eukaryotic, we started progressing much faster.

Then, keep in mind, the life has to continue to exist for billions of more years while it waits for the advanced life to happen again within the same section of the galaxy. So, time is two filters - both behind us and in front of us.

  • My favorite filter is the amount of phosphorous in the universe. Earth has an unusually high amount, and it’s vital for life. I like this one, because as more stars die, the amount of phosphorous goes up, implying we won’t be alone forever.

Anyway, look up “Issac Arthur” on YouTube for HOURS of content about the Fermi paradox and potential great filters.

  • I dream every night. I even dream frequently while taking naps, sometimes as short as 15-20 minutes.

Many dreams I forget shortly upon waking. As in, I can’t remember what it was about by the time I get out of bed. But, I do actually remember the dream for a few seconds, so I know it happened. The majority of my dreams I can recall for the rest of the morning or even day. If something noteworthy happened, I can remember the dream for days, weeks, or years. I really depends on how impactful/meaningful the dream was.

I have not used sleep journals or anything of that nature to help me remember dreams. I have always been like this. I also have had sleep paralysis and sporadic insomnia for about as long as I can remember - not severe or frequent enough to need treatment.

  • So, I’m also a layman. I have been following bird flu news articles since the massive wild bird deaths started.

For what it’s worth, it didn’t just start jumping to mammals recently. It’s been infecting aquatic mammals for a while. I believe European minks and goats were infected even before that. Luckily, the virus doesn’t currently seem to be infecting the lungs of cattle. Similarly, the one human who contracted it recently had no respiratory symptoms. It seems he touched a cow and then touched his eye, causing the spread.

Based on articles I’ve read, it won’t be a problem for humans until the virus infects the upper respiratory tracts of humans easily.

However, with cattle farmers seemingly taking no precautions other than not milking sick cows (and I’m not even sure I believe that, honestly), it may just be a matter of time before that happens. Every infected cow is a place for the virus to spread and mutate.

  • I have this mantra that I say to myself. I think it’s from Tibetan monks, but I heard it on an NPR interview.

"May we be victorious over our fears.

May we be happy without hope.

May we be of benefit to all."

The fear here is my fear of doing the thing. The lack of hope is what I feel because I will not just fucking do the thing. The benefit to all is what happens when I actually do the thing.

I know it sounds super depressing, but it helps me… sometimes.

  • I remember these days. I used to sing “the first boot is the longest” to the tune of “the first cut is the deepest” when booting a phone after installing a new OS. Have you tried just letting it run for a while? Although, if it takes longer than 30 minutes, then it’s probably hopeless. Would suggest reinstalling factory ROM or trying a custom one in that case.
