No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?
17·2 years agoMeh, an RGB notification LED was still much more glanceable. I agree that it’s somewhat redundant, but I had OLED phones with notif LEDs and it was still nice.
I came up with a formula for my passwords - as easy to remember as a single password and makes a unique login for every site feasible without a password manager. Can be updated as often as you like and all you gotta do is remember the latest version of the formula. At the very least, the hashes will be different and it’d take someone having more than two of my passwords to figure out the pattern.
I also use over 100 email aliases with my own domain name so that my most important accounts have a separate login that isn’t a common domain that wouldn’t be easy for someone to guess.
It would take a lot of concentrated effort for someone to get at any of my important accounts, and even my less important ones would be pretty difficult to get into even if multiple accounts are compromised, due to using a smaller pool of aliases under common domains for less important accounts.
Someone got into half a dozen of my accounts a few years ago and I finally started taking security seriously.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Why does this community, which is privacy oriented, use Discord rather than Matrix?
21·3 years agoI’ve never gotten why Brave got popular in the first place. I downloaded it once and uninstalled within 3 minutes.
Cromite and Waterfox are all I’ll ever need.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Wanna see how far the rabbit hole goes?
9·3 years agoI’m using the most trimmed Windows installs I can find (and manually trimming bits myself) to try and keep overhead as low as possible, but it’s still… rough. Don’t know how far I’ll actually be able to get. Once I get to XP I may just skip to 95, but we’ll see.
I got sidetracked trimming Windows services on my primary install, lol.

9·3 years agoI maybe wasn’t clear, I didn’t make this, I just found it and figured folks here could benefit from knowing about it!
But no clue if it’ll help with that, worth a shot tho.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Windows: we noticed that you kept the useless search bar disabled since 2015, so we sent an update that re-enabled it without your permissionEnglish
2·3 years agoOh I agree completely. I also think a lot of people just don’t realize that many of the things they think of as part of Windows can be tweaked or removed, so they just sit there assuming they have to live with it when there’s a fix that most people could implement if they google a how-to guide (or they could ask their nerdy friend).
I love helping friends set up Windows installs, because they’re always so shocked at how little clutter there is and how well everything works. At the same time it makes me mad that all of that is necessary at all, and I’m swearing at Microsoft the whole time I’m helping them.

1·3 years agoIt’s a single registry key or a single group policy edit, and I’m not talking to the average user, I’m talking to Lemmy users.
I’m saying as far as annoyances in windows go, this is incredibly simple to change if you are at all familiar with tweaking advanced windows shit.
Yeahhh here’s to hoping someone AURs it 😅

5·3 years agoI mean for sure but I play games with my nephews so for me dual booting Windows is worth it, and it’s certainly something to consider when deciding how you’re gonna set up your system, as much as that sucks.
I hope it’ll change on games that do, or they’ll set up a workaround for Linux, but for now if you care about a game that uses it, ysk beforehand so that you can decide whether to dump that game or dual boot.

11·3 years agoYou can remove the Internet search and make it do normal search pretty easily. I know I know you shouldn’t have to, just saying putting an hour into cleaning Windows is worth.

Bro wants to sound important and educated soooo bad. I actually giggled reading “economical attributes”. Like I don’t think even you understand what you’re trying to say.
Leftists want this. You’re not saying something revolutionary. The problem is that in America, getting democratic socialism with redistribution of wealth is much more realistic than a total social overhaul like you’re suggesting.
Uhhh no. Capitalism and the govt give finance power. Recognizing and attempting to use the system to better the lives of people isn’t the problem, it just isn’t the ideal solution. It’s a stop-gap.
You can claim “true leftism” all day, but I live in reality where half-assed solutions are better than nothing.
