Hot take: Public voting records are good actually.

They need massive amounts of data. There is simply no way to manually curate data on that scale, short of hiring like a million people. It’s very likely that they do use some sort of automated filtering to curate the data though.

If we can throw tens of millions of soldiers into meat grinders for wars, then I think hiring a few million people to curate data is table stakes by comparison.

I see a lot of posts about how lemmy.ml admins are deleting any posts critical of Russia & China. Are there any receipts for those claims? I haven’t seen any actual proof, just a whole lot of people saying tankie.

The modlogs show that the moderators there are doing their job. If folks wanna continue uncritically regurgitating NATO propaganda and McCarthyism, they can do it elsewhere. Though I will admit, the irony of thousands of people fleeing a capitalist sinking ship, to a ship built and run by communists, only to then complain about all the communists, is funny.

I was overwhelmed by the options of instances. Then Reddit is Fun had a pop up message suggesting to go to lemmy.world. I trusted Reddit is Fun so I followed its suggestion.

I open today rif accidently and it started to work again. Logged out mind you. Got a weird message with instructions to log back into my Reddit account. Was able to browse Reddit as a guest on the meanwhile. Didn’t want to log back in as fuck Reddit.

Did rif sell to Reddit? Couldn’t blame him if he did but all the same I am leaving. Just can’t see how rif would still work without Reddit owning his servers. Anyone know what is going on?

Been using it for a little over a year, I think. No complaints about the service itself, though its founder, Vlad, is of the opinion that moderation of search results is simultaneously a bad thing that should not be done, and a benefit to users, depending on context. Typical libertarian-brain in that sense.

I’d rather keep the different mediums separate. I have fundamentally different expectations of a medium like Lemmy, which is async, and Matrix, which is synchronous.

He doesn’t afraid of anything, even conflict resolution.

Cue the chorus of lame excuses as for why people are still using Google Botnet instead of Firefox.

I get what you’re saying, but as of now a lot of people new to the concept of the Fediverse just don’t care. They’re going to join the instances with the most people. Like the Mastodon migration, this will inevitibly result in a “default” instance regardless of how people feel. Not sure if that’ll change, unless something forces people to realize maintaining the decentralized aspect of these servives is very important.

The masses need not understand the importance of decentralization. Only the admins of the instances do. And when admins seek to compulsively accumulate users en masse, rather than close off registration and route to other instances, it’s a pretty obvious tell as to what they’re doing.

I feel like you’re ascribing way to much to leftists when far right and libertarians were fleeing reddit too. Like, it’s not just the left that interest in a non-corporate environment.

Liberals are not “leftists,” and they are not of “the left.” Liberalism is a right-wing ideology (just not as right-wing) and as such, is devoted to capitalism.

I don’t think tinwhiskers has problems with communists. If they had problem with communists, they would surely have said “communists”.

They said “tankies”. I am more inclined to suggest their issue is with tankies, not communists.

“Tankie” is a pejorative for Marxist-Leninist, the most successful approach to building communism in all of history, responsible for improving the material conditions of hundreds of millions of people on a scale never before seen in history. Anyone who unironically uses “tankie” as a pejorative in the 21st century is thoroughly anti-communist, be it intentionally or otherwise.

Don’t sign up to lemmy.ml or you’ll need to sign up again on a new instance when they get defederated. Tankies. I guess a blind eye is being turned right now because numbers are important for survival atm, but I wouldn’t consider it a future-proof instance.

It never ceases to amuse me that throngs of liberals, fleeing from yet another capitalist centralized service doing what capitalist centralized services do, are so quick to denigrate the work of the communists that made their flight to an alternative possible in the first place. We wouldn’t have Lemmy – and the numerous improvements to Groups in the ActivityPub standard – if it weren’t for communists like them.

Also, LemmyGrad.ml has most of the “tankies.” Lemmy.ml is more generically socialist.

I fully expect .world to become the default at some point, it statistically has more active users and is outgrowing .ml at a rapid pace.

The whole point of federation is that there is no such thing as “the default.” As soon as that happens, it becomes Just Another Reddit Clone.

Yep. ActivityPub is the best thing to hit the internet in the past decade. I think the decentralization it enables does a good enough job of balancing between the absolute control of a fully centralized service and the absolute chaos of a fully distributed service.

Last I heard they had plans to integrate into it, but nothing active yet.

I’ll be interested to see if they try to keep the money happy by trying to kill porn on reddit. If they try that reddit would be in worse shape than Trump.

Worked out so great for Tumblr. But apparently the plan is to take all the worst ideas from the past couple years and speedrun 'em, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

It definitely feels like they’re going for a world record in the “kill your golden goose as fast as possible” category.
