6·5 days agoI always wonder how long it’s gonna take before plastic-eating bacteria start to proliferate in the wild. There was a while back in prehistory when there was no microbe in existence that could eat wood and trees were almost immortal, and that’s how we got certain fossil fuels, because when a tree died by getting knocked over by wind or whatever, the wood went into the ground undigested. I think. The main appeal of plastic is that it’s currently nigh on invincible to microbial attack and so is perfect for sealed containers (when you need to keep something fresh and preserved), but I assume eventually plastic will be just as prone to rot as cardboard. I wonder, will glass then make a comeback?
201·11 days agoIronically (given the original name of this community), the ancient Chinese had entire discourses on the idea that in order for society to function correctly, people needed to be able to agree what words meant.
A superior man, in regard to what he does not know, shows a cautious reserve. If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success. When affairs cannot be carried on to success, proprieties and music will not flourish. When proprieties and music do not flourish, punishments will not be properly awarded. When punishments are not properly awarded, the people do not know how to move hand or foot. Therefore a superior man considers it necessary that the names he uses may be spoken appropriately, and also that what he speaks may be carried out appropriately. What the superior man requires is just that in his words there may be nothing incorrect.

The established names of the later kings: penal and legal terms followed those of Shang, noble titles followed those of Zhou, literary titles followed those of Li. As for miscellaneous names applied to all things, they conformed to the established customs and conventions of Zhuxia; in distant regions with different local customs, these were adapted accordingly for general understanding.
As for miscellaneous names applied to people: the inherent nature that causes a person to be what he is called “xing.” The harmony of xing gives rise to refined interactions and responsive 感应; when things occur effortlessly and naturally without deliberate action, this is called xing. The inclinations of xing—liking, disliking, joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness—are called qing. When the emotions arise and the mind makes choices in response, this is called lü (deliberation). When the mind deliberates and is thus able to act intentionally, this is called wei. When deliberation accumulates and becomes habitual, and only then achieves formation, it is called wei. Acting in accordance with what is righteous and beneficial is called shi (affairs or actions). Acting in accordance with righteousness is called xing (conduct or behavior). The capacity for knowledge within a person is called zhi. When knowledge aligns with something, it is called zhi (wisdom). The capacity for action within a person is called neng. When ability aligns with something, it is also called neng (capability). When xing is harmed, it is called bing (illness or affliction). A person’s encounter with measured circumstances is called ming (fate or destiny): these are the miscellaneous names applied to people, and they represent the established terms of later kings.
Therefore, when a sovereign establishes names, once names are fixed and realities distinguished, the Way is put into practice and aspirations become clear; thus, he carefully leads the people toward unity. Therefore, to split words and arbitrarily create names in order to confuse established terms, causing the people to be doubtful and leading to frequent disputes among them, is called a great jian (great villain or great wrongdoer). Their crime is still akin to that of falsifying tokens, seals, and measurements. Therefore, the people dare not fabricate strange words to confuse established names; thus, their people are sincere and upright. Sincerity makes them easy to lead, and being easy to lead leads to public harmony. The people dare not fabricate strange terms to confuse established names, so they remain unified in the Way and law, and are careful to follow commands. If this is done, then their legacy will be enduring. An enduring legacy and accomplished achievements represent the highest attainment of governance. This is the achievement of carefully upholding the conventions of names. Now that the sage kings have passed away, the guardianship of names has become lax; strange terms arise, and the correspondence between names and realities becomes confused. When the forms of right and wrong are unclear, even those officials who uphold the law and Confucian scholars who recite canonical texts also fall into disorder. If a sovereign were to arise, he would surely follow established names while also creating new ones as needed. Therefore, the reasons for having names, the basis on which things are deemed the same or different, and the essential principles of establishing names must not be overlooked.

musketeersDahar masters. Kang is far more serious and a better fit for this character, and even looks more like Demore Barnes. So making him Kor instead is an odd decision.
See, this doesn’t really happen to me because doing the dishes is one of my favorite chores. It’s doing the bins that’s a pain in the hole.

Hopefully this has been instructive in how you can’t trust the Internet, especially YouTube/TikTok. Since from your perspective I am also an anonymous Internet rando, I suggest that you distrust what I have claimed too, and see for yourself by looking up the movie’s wikipedia article or some other source that’s more trustworthy than an anonymous Internet rando. It’s important to develop that habit - to verify things for yourself, and to figure out which sources you can rely on.
In the Captain America movie we learn that the current [MCU] President was near the same blast that created the first Hulk. Yadda yadda, the President becomes the Red Hulk and ends up in jail. Harrison Ford plays the President and he’s sorrowful for what happened and Captain America is also sad.
No, the president (a formerly retired US army general named Ross who had been hunting the Hulk for years) is revealed to have been holding a character from the first Hulk movie in prison for years without trial and forcing that character (Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader) to use his incredible genius to do two things: 1 - help him with his heart condition (which was what had forced his retirement in the first place) and 2 - help him win the presidency. It is then revealed that The Leader, instead of simply curing his heart condition, has been seeking revenge by dosing him slowly with a substance that has turned him into another Hulk; this one red.
The Leader then instigates a series of events which politically embarrass Ross and put him under increasing stress in the hopes of triggering a public hulkout which will ruin him. In this, he succeeds, and Captain America is forced to try and stop the Red Hulk somehow without killing him. Cap eventually succeeds in calming him down, at which point he reverts to Ross and is promptly imprisoned in super-jail.
What? Brave New World ends with Captain America putting the president in jail. I have no idea what would make you think the movie promotes an “obey no matter what” policy. That you would even suggest that it does leads me to suspect that you’re not being entirely honest here. There’s a difference between shitposting and flat-out disinformation.

I have no idea whether I have that or not because I’ve never tasted soap for comparison. Cilantro has… A flavor for me, certainly, but I have no idea if it’s the right one.
I think the main goal of the Maquis was not to evoke sympathy for them, but to put the main characters in interesting moral/ethical quandaries. Both TNG and DS9 did “forced relocation” episodes where the narrative focus was on the fact that there were no “right” answers, only “less wrong” ones.
In that sense, it’s like the Kobayashi Maru: the main characters are presented with a no-win scenario and the purpose of the episode is that watching how they deal with that tells us more about who these characters are and what they stand for. Kira’s episode certainly helped define her character, especially when Sisko summed it up for her: she was used to fighting for the underdog, but she was on the other side now.
Not trying to be a smartarse here but what on Earth is a P-cup!? The largest I’ve ever heard of is an I-cup; in my imagination a P-cup engulfs the planet. How do you live???

Yeah we need whatever microbes break down plastic to remain isolated so that we can break down plastic when we want to but it remains “invincible” otherwise.
