Trump is both a symptom, of some deeper underlying issues, and a cause, of feed-forwarding those same issues - e.g. amplifying their power and their spread beyond what they would have done without his help.

Many people thought that Ron Desantis would take Trump’s place - that speaks to Trump being a mere symptom. However, Ron had no chance to win the the overall presidential election - that speaks to how crucial Trump is specifically to it, in its current form I mean.

The Alt Right Playbook, by Innuendo Studios, describes conservatism so much better than I ever could though.

Far less than on Reddit, but it still affects someone’s experiences. e.g. just bc someone does not experience something daily does not mean that it never happens, but often a person in a minority status group has no choice to ignore such, while the privileged status person can.

There is also The Onion and other satire w/ [email protected]. You could post both here and there - to link them make sure to use the repost feature, in the Lemmy web UI it looks like a double square to the right of the favorite/star icon - and thereby help grow that community on another instance.

Not only would that help the overall goal of not having all posts of one type be in a single location on the Fediverse, but I wonder if those words appearing (of “and other satire w/ layers”) may help with understanding for the post in this community as well. Probably not though, bc the only people who tend to read the sidebar are those who actually make posts, while those who comment often do not.:-)

Exactly that. Which ironically doesn’t mean that everything that they say is false… but it does mean that everything that they say is suspect.

We need a billionaire to swoop in an save us. Which won’t happen, so we need a grass roots effort from the ground up to save us. Which won’t happen so we need a spaghett monster or god to save us. Which won’t happen bc e.g. the Christian God allows free will hence consequences… so we need aliens to save us. Which won’t happen bc they do not exist - that we can demonstrate.

It is a lot easier to destroy than to create, and it will require enormous efforts to maintain constant vigilance to know things in the future, in this our mis- and worse yet dis-information era.

I feel like we both mentioned facts there - hopefully we added something to the conversation, that there’s some nuance wherein it both is but also is not The Onion, depending on which “it” we’re talking about:-).

For-profit media sells whatever makes them the highest profits. (Those who won’t, make way to those who will, or remain in obscurity e.g. how many people have even heard of Ian Danskin of Innuendo Studios.)

They will sell anything it seems, with little to no regard for facts. Then they leave it to you to determine the lies of omission, while hunting for the real truth, i.e. to do the true work of journalism. But usually unpaid, painstakingly, and again you’ll never be able to share that message by virtue of being in conflict with the for-profit sources. Or if you do, who would even understand you, especially among the sheeple who either cannot and/or also will not bother to read anything at all.

Some people like Jon Stewart have railed against this for decades… but he lost, and it’s worse than ever before. Adjust your expectations accordingly. This is the world.

Speaking of, I saw a post today that lead me to check out Reddit for the first time in months… damn we sure do have much more friendly conversations here! It’s enough to make me forget all the years of toxicity there, towards the end. 🙃
