They are a solution people took back in the day to self publish. Publishing company’s act like moderators did back in the day. They rejected this arbitrarily and gate kept what people saw. So people would create zines of their interests and leave them all over town. Some became super popular

Mods today are not what mods where originally used for. Hell does anyone remember what the original point of up and down voting was for.
Originally we held a strong belief that the community should control moderation while mods were there to make sure nothing illegal or crazy was posted.
We also didn’t call people arguing “trolling” but that changed so mods could remove anyone they didn’t agree with. It’s disgusting that we accepted it.

You can’t even utilize the tools giving to you to muster a solid defense online. You’re all just showing up everyday giving up/down votes and reading your daily alloted news article about Trump in your over moderate hug box.
You probably had to review multiple rules just to post this message in case you pissed off some almost homeless 18 year old moderator. I know the instinct is to say fuck me over this stuff. But think how moderation is actually a tool to destroy creativity, originality and effort. Moderation is a tool created by corporations to sanitize the internet so it could be sold piecemeal to advertisers. But what this also does is prevent us from keeping events in the forefront. If i have a political content community that only allows one type of content, that is fucking boring and stifling. When we separate our politics into [discussion], [political memes] [news] it may look nice but you kill free form thought and how people actually communicate. This is what feels different from the internet back in the day and the internet today. We have moderation sanitize our efforts. Compare this to MAGA or the right whose spaces are more creative. They combine multiple types of media into a menagerie that keeps things alive and interesting. Their spaces are filled with new, memes, in jokes plus calls to action. Because that’s exciting. That’s how content works. There’s collaboration and mixing of media to create new stuff, like we use to before 15 years ago.
The left has been boxed in on purpose. We are in a snuff box. MAGA seized every platform that’s full of kindling and energy while we placed ourselves into a snuff box. Until we fix some core problems and understand how the internet works to engage people then nobody should be encouraging any kind of revolution. If you cannot fight in an online digital space and get measurable victories in a low effort maximum impact environment then a revolution is just going to get people killed and laws that push us towards more authoritarian state.
And maybe I’m wrong. Could be full of shit. But if you want things to change we need to look at us as a whole and address our faults because we all fucked up big time. For decades the left went from a dominate culturally relevant position to a fucking joke. We’re still using the most outdated playbooks and refusing to adapt to a new world. MAGA fucking sucks. But their victories is directly related to how we reacted and interacted. How did we show up for no kings with millions and nothing happened. How did we show up to BLM and only thing that lasted was the idea that the organization was corrupt and stealing millions. How did we show up for the woman’s march and still they’re dying in states because they can’t access abortion. What we did is not working and I think it’s a systematic problem in the left that needs to be reviewed before attempting anything.
They’re all switching back to providing content for free which would not happen if it failed. Only ones who can afford subscription model are ones that already established their brand and even then some failed

So much smarm for something you don’t really know.
Because a lot of you are cowards and hid away instead of helping to shape public opinion. When these leaders like AOC and others do not have people creating content on popular platforms then it leaves a runway for the opposition to create any narrative they want. It’s a numbers game at this point. The opposition convinced supporters to run away and hide and they did willingly.
It worked for NYT because they already built a brand and had established customers. For others it failed. The model failed more than it succeeded aside from some special cases
There is currently a subscription reversal because the model failed for now than it succeeded. NYT is in a spot where it could succeed off its established brand. But others it didn’t work. The trend is the subscription model fails. Times, WP, Atlantic and others couldn’t sustain it.
Also I’m left as fuck, I don’t care if quality is good or the model work to help some faceless group of shareholders. I’ll support whatever destroys anyone putting up pay walls online. Burn it all down. It’s the only way.
Not sure if it was all ads. Like how some of the biggest eras of music coincide with pirating music. Maybe you can squeeze some subscriptions by blocking people but over time it isn’t sustainable. When you provide an easily accessible platform that people want to come to, you can leverage that to other sales, not just ads.

Because profits don’t only come from subscriptions.
Because the first 15 years online it was all for free and we all read much more news on their sites until they put it behind paywalls. Now we all get our news from memes. So that’s why.

My point here isn’t to shit on the left just to shit on them. It’s to at least get discussion if not find others who see it too. I think we’re asleep. Maybe hoping if we just play the ethical long game that maybe it’ll all return. In my mind we’re standing on the beach watching the tide recede after an earthquake. Like most thing stuff is weird, but they’re not really tracking that they need to start acting now if it isn’t already too late.
My hope is people get a fire under there ass and first admit that we have fucked up and it’s time to start firing up our own grass roots efforts. Download gimp. Get back on social media since we were never going to make a dent in their profits. Start using all these tools even AI to resist and present a front against these modern nazis. Play fucking dirty if we have to. People bitch about money but that money is only doing what we do for fun. Instead of obsessing about beans and moths, let’s get back to being political and taking ground.
Lemmy could be a staging ground with the way it is built. Because when a site is a threat, they’ll use every capitalist lever they can to squash it. They’ll bring in moderation teams. They’ll bring in ads. They’ll bring in the tools we didn’t resist. And if they do, we stand up a new instance without that shit. Which goes to my point. You fought wrong. What i see is that the left is very likely manipulated by right wing interest groups way more than people want to admit. I think for decades now, they have targeted leftist online for issues we traditionally dominated and redirected people into areas that were very ineffective. Meanwhile they socially engineered the right side and MAGA to actually effective social engagement. After decades the left is just a dead in the water idea with people who no longer know how to use the internet correctly for social engineering and engagement. The only time the left rallies is when the effort is the most high effort, high energy, low reward movement people could possibly imagine.
The left in the past were intelligent intellectual building and innovating things. That is no longer the case. We’re resting on the laurels of the best and looking around at lemmy should make it very obvious how true this is.
The sad reality i think people need to understand its the MAGA isn’t winning just because of money. They’re wining because they’re putting effort in areas that the left don’t even realize are important. They are playing chess and the left aren’t even playing because competition makes the left feel anxious.
I have multiple people in my life on the right who spend all their time online posting and networking and planning. They will shit post all day. Between the 3 of them, they probably create tons of content. Let alone sharing and promoting others content.
People on the left I know will read an article. Can’t be bothered to share or even upvote. Maybe they’ll write a comment like “This sucks, Trump is stupid” and then they go look for star trek memes all day. Give this behavior 20 years for the kids today to grow up. Everything is fine. Nazis are marching in streets again primarily driven by online recruitment. Billionaires are investing in removing leftist from digital spaces to facilitate this. But because I care, I’m obsessed.
