  • Pay attention to when people tell you what to think and be extra suspicious of that kind of behavior. Question everything. Trust but verify.

Now don’t fall into the trap of just being a contrarian. Just because everyone is telling you the same thing doesn’t mean it’s ALWAYS some big conspiracy. It could actually just be the right thing.

Basically just be curious and don’t form opinions purely based off people you look up to or admire.

  • You shouldn’t view things like they have “sides”. People are complicated. Situations involving one or many people are even more complex. People who have done arguably great things for humanity have also done terrible things in their personal lives. It’s not an all or nothing type of thing. Some people will tell you it is, but those people are either stupid or pushing an agenda.

Picking “sides” removes any nuance from the conversation and is often short sighted.

You can generally agree with a “side” but find individual statements that you disagree with. There are basically no “sides” or people that I universally agree with across every single little thing.

I’ll give one of my favorite examples of this: The Wright brothers. Without them we wouldn’t have modern flight which has not only saved countless lives but it also enabled great expansion with their new technology. Most people would argue that the Wright brothers were very important and a good thing that happened… however the Wright brothers were incredibly litigious and because of that they probably held back the technological growth of aviation for several years because of that behavior. At that time technology was moving incredibly quick so who knows how much it delayed things in the grand scheme of things.

It doesn’t mean that them figuring out how to fly and making the first air plane is now bad, but it does change their perception that they were these giving “father’s of flight”. They were greedy little shits who wanted all the money who happened to figure out how to fly.

A more common example would Winston Churchill. Arguably one of the most important players during WW2. Many argue that without his leadership the war would have gone quite different. He also happened to be super racist.

Don’t discredit everything good someone has done because of one bad thing they did. But also don’t ignore the bad things people have done because they have done some good. Take them as the whole. Flawed but human.

  • I think pretty much everyone is living in various states of denial.

Some don’t care and never will care about facts or logical thinking. They are driven by emotion exclusively and go wherever it takes them. Usually anger and depression.

Some are too stupid to recognize facts or logical thinking.

Many people who think they are above others because they have all the facts and they think they are being logical at all times, but in reality they have at best misunderstood facts or selective facts.

This is isn’t unique to one party or group either. Every single group of people has idiots who think they know everything. Poorly educated who think they understand everything. I believe that generally speaking most people think they are doing the right thing and they want the best for themselves and others around them.

Never attribute to malice what can accurately be explained by incompetence.

People need to stop forgetting about Hanlons Razor

  • I used to be a zoom admin for a very large college before and during the start of COVID. At that time I never recall seeing anything about participation metrics and whatnot. Other than someone recording the meeting and watching it back I don’t think there is anything they can see besides who joined and what/if they typed.

I will say the admins can see “private” dms to each other if they really want to. So while nobody else in the call can see what you’re typing to your buddy in the moment the admins can if they want to. So don’t type anything in those private chats unless you would hypothetically be ok with your boss seeing it.

It’s been a few years since I left that job though so it possible they have added more data logging for things like camera and mic “on” time.

Personally even now for my work as long as I connect to the meetings when I’m supposed to they never care if I turn on my webcam or unmute. I’ll answer the random question thrown my way, but otherwise I’m on my phone or doing actual work work while sorta half listening to whatever meeting.

I never said it wasn’t a shitty system. Just that 900 bucks over the course of 5 years is not an unfathomably amount of money to pay for something. I’ve spent more than 900 on a single car repair several times in my life. Unless they have been living in abject poverty I just don’t see how they couldn’t have paid it off by now. Median American income for a household is 80k. Yeah they aren’t living in luxury but they can afford the occasional expense.

  • If your house was built after 2000 (or has updated wiring) you might wanna look into Ethernet over power. The kits are usually less than 50 bucks (depending on the speeds you’re using) and they allow you to hardline your computer without running a cable across the entire house.

The way they work is by plugging a parent box directly into the wall near your router you can run a short Ethernet to the box and then plug in the sister box near your gaming rig and run another short Ethernet from the wall to your computer. It basically just uses the copper wires of the house wiring to transfer the data.

There are some exceptions to be aware of. If you have a particularly large house the speeds might suffer over a long enough run. Or if they have the internet on an entirely different breaker panel it won’t work.

I am currently using one at my house. The wire gives me better ping, but slightly lower total download speed. So if I’m downloading a big game or something I’ll just unplug the Ethernet at let it download faster over wifi and then I switch back to wired for gaming.

  • Sadly I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. The unfortunate reality is that both forms of extremism tend to slowly pull at people from the center over time. Even if we got a group of moderates around someone would get mad and get pushed one way or another more. And thus the cycle repeats.

It’s the classic “what radicalized you” meme. All of us are extremists in one way or another. We just haven’t had something push us over the edge yet.
