I’d like the name to be “community feed” and “feeds” for short. Reddit was always essentially a collective rss with voting weights. In this way “subs” would still work since one subscribes to the feeds.

I’m not super familiar with the right terminology, but in short I think users should be able to follow whoever they want, but restrictions on how it is interacted with is fair game. I think following and replying to threads accounts is sort of a must, even if boosting and other functions are disabled. Also on favor of preventing non-replies from being sent to threads.
The real issue issue is interop with Threads means surveillance of users. Limiting the info going from here to there is essential. However a read-only mode that lets us get some value out of it is fine

FWIW getting one of those disc suitcases can hold hundreds of dvds without taking up much space at all. If you rip backups, you can store it somewhere out of the way without too much clutter. Plus it’s a very stable backup for the digital files.

Even as a vegan, I’ll say, robbing folks of autonomy over food is truly awful. Food holds deep cultural and psychological meanings.
I’d take a few folks eating meat less regularly (willingly, and seeing value in it) over any number of folks forced into vegetarianism.
To be more precise it is anti-US-imperialism and hegemony, which itself is a fine sentiment but when you’re willing to let any right wing dictator lead that fight you’ve really lost any credibility as a leftist.
Even with IP, there is very little stopping the big actors from developing something similar but debatable distinct, at a larger scale. By the time the lawsuit clears, they’ve wrecked your profitablity.
In fact, more often you see big companies act as patent trolls, using IP as a bludgeon to threaten smaller players who don’t have an army of lawyers. See, DMCA takedowns to suppress speech, patent trolls, and esp trademark nonsense.
Trade secrets fit your example best, but more often than not that’s something that relies on worker restrictions rather than traditional “IP”

One of many nice aspects of the fediverse, it’s not a software monoculture that can be wiped out by a single exploit.
I’m split on this, on the one hand I think universities should set up instances for official channels of communication. It’s ridiculous to rely on some 3rd party service and it’s algorithm to, say, tell everyone for is cancelled due to weather. It has done costs but makes these communication lines much more resilient.
Yet, extending this instance to staff, let alone students, is a huge can of worms. Bring in charge of moderation and web hosting opens the school up to so so much litigation. They’ll frankly never do that.
The thing is, meta has a user base 100sx the size of the fediverse, and absolutely no incentive to EEE a project that is very very niche and inaccessible to a lay audience.
It’s not that straightforward. Copyright is different in that infringement is only enforced by rightsholders through litigation. That means they hato find you, sue you, and make a convincing argument that your backup is harming their market viability.
On that last point, some personal backup is unlikely to be found to be infringing. It’s more problematic if it’s something shared or done in a significant scale.
