My deepest condolences. He was truly magnificent. Losing a pet is akin to losing a child. I’m currently in the process of saying goodbye to my oldest, it’s likely a matter of days. But I wouldn’t have it any other way; the joy they bring into our lives far outshines the grief when we have to let them go.

The effects that worry me most and are arguably the best studied are those on the human endocrine system. It unarguably interferes with our hormonal system, although it is not yet known to which degree or how it impacts each individual separately. Most likely this will go the way of cigarettes; with the world “knowing” it’s poison but not taking action until the effects can absolutely no longer be ignored. By which time it will be too late for many.

I hear you but nah. We have more than enough “realistic” and “gritty” shows. The whimsy of X-files was what made it tick. Taking that away would just make it boring which is the worst possible outcome for such a show.

Definitely agreed on cars, but Japan’s last few moon missions had several catastrophic failures unfortunately.

Fairly sure they “saved” hundreds of thousands in wages only to lose millions to billions in material. An engineer working 80 hour weeks month after month isn’t nearly going to be as productive as one doing 40hr weeks, no matter how many hours they put out. There’s actually a point where it turns negative and every extra hour put in detracts from output, not to mention long-time wellbeing and development.

It’s incredible, isn’t it? I used to be so stoked on space exploration and all the science that goes with it. Still am, really, but my enthusiasm has cooled markedly once billionaires started throwing dick-shaped space missiles around for no other reason than being able to.

Have you ever lived in the projects? As a (former, but still) poor person, living there is… challenging. Your opinions of your fellow humans regularly have to be adjusted, especially if you’re prone to being an optimist.

Not ghetto but simply very basic, rural living. The house I grew up in did not have indoor plumbing. The toilet was outside in an outhouse, just a plank with a hole in the middle above a cesspit. My parents were split up and my mother got the absolute minimum pay and my father wasted his wages on alcohol and women. So there were few luxuries during my youth.

Today I’m 41 and I’m BARELY above that level of poverty. If I lose my job for whatever reason it’s back to that kind of life.

That was in the '80s in Western Europe, by the way. Today this situation has become a lot more rare but it’s not gone yet.

Man, I miss Nintendo’s Iwata/Reggie age. Those guys had vision beyond just endless profits.
