  • I’ve used Pihole for so long… I bought the original pi as a curiosity but Pihole was best use of it.

Here is the problem though, which i assume applies to all adblockers: everything is now “sponsored links”. Google, Amazon, etc. They are of course blocked which is getting really frustrating.

So what do we do now? Is there a way to just send fake telemetry? Saw VLANs mentioned. Is that the way? I’m getting older and life gets busier and it’s harder for me to keep up on this.

  • What are you on about?

I’m actually in complete agreement with you. Yes there are safeties and whatever, I was just saying those safeties aren’t exactly monitored as you would expect. Don’t worry, I’m sure it won’t affect you. Wasn’t this just about chart recorders?

As for the personal stuff, sorry you took it that way. You want to argue about something we agree on and I know exactly how that goes. As such, i suggest we just skip to the part where we chill and do something fun. No you aren’t my child but picking apart my simple comment is sorta… well you know. It’s all good, you might be one in 8 billion but I’m still your friend. Take care.

  • I don’t know if it’s still there but I once did some work getting a plasma cutter back to operational. OS/2. Not even warp!

Oh it’s a pretty solid OS but i mean, damn.

Parallel port hardware key and everything. I do believe in keeping what works working but at some point you gotta let go because you run out of people that can solve problems with it.

  • No no no you misunderstood me.

I was being honest, I know nothing of rust. I have however used python in embedded systems with positive results. The product didn’t make it but for other reasons.

Funny you mention java, that’s sorta what I’m stuck in but not like you think. Beyond the fact that it’s a bloated nightmare.

I’m just a low-level programmer at heart but I have bills to pay. The rust stuff was all just a joke… i don’t know it but maybe i should. Thanks for the info.

Saying anymore about what I do is just super embarrassing but i promise i meant no ill will. Excuse my frustration, I’m locked into a proprietary system i have no control over. You would laugh your ass off if you saw it. Anyway, i meant no offense, have a good night!

  • Hah thanks for clarifying. I was joking too and it’s a shame I couldn’t post the results.

Though I admit i don’t know anything about rust. I’m sure I’d like it better than the proprietary garbage i use now that just gets converted to ASM / PLC code in the end. But I can’t skip the middle man. I’m not gonna try but probably 30mins for me to “write” the above.

Besides, how do you make money if I can code something in an hour as opposed to 2 days?

  • These days… maybe you are right. When i was fresh out into the world I lived paycheck to paycheck. Rent comes due, I have to try and stretch it as i have a few days grace and i need things like food to live and gas to get to work.

Get my check, deposit it, give rent check later that day. Guess which cleared first? I was short 12 cents and got hit with $80 in fees (inflation adjusted it’s nearly twice that now) and had to pay rent via money order for 6 months. 12 cents! They could have just shorted it that amount and I’d have been happy to give them a quarter I had laying around. But rather it just made my next month more miserable.

I do think things are better now and there are plenty of overdraft protection methods in place and who uses checks anyway but fact is they had my deposit and did the withdrawal first.

I’m genuinely glad you’ve never had to deal with such a situation and yes $35 isn’t bad. But the thing is - fuck banks. They will find every opportunity to hurt the less fortunate.

Ironically I still bank with them, or what they became. I’m on my 4th account now because their fraud protection is pretty good. So there’s a positive aspect.

Interesting. Can relate having spent most of my life on a southern coast. One summer my parents shipped me to my uncle in Denver for a few weeks. One day we dropped by an air show. It’s summer and it’s hot (mid 90s or so) but you can’t feel it. People passing out was common enough it had an announcement.

Cut to later that day and we are up in the mountains and I’m walking through a snow bank with the same T-shirt and shorts from earlier, perfectly comfortable.

So yeah if it’s dry you can wear about anything… when it’s humid nothing seems to work be it hot or cold. If we are gonna change the climate here are my notes: I’d like 65-68degF and let’s say 45% RH. All day everyday. Make it so!

  • I’m gonna watch how your post is voted. I’ve gotten burned for that stance my entire life even though it’s perfectly logical.

Don’t really get the idea you aren’t supposed to try stuff out without upfront payment. Slightly better now but meh.

Don’t you worry though, any software I needed for business was all bought and paid for. I’m sure a few pennies got to the programmers / developers / artists that designed it. And i simply passed the cost on to my clients. Pretty obvious who wins here.

Then again I don’t really get what this post is about, just replying to you.

Edit: is qbitorrent still cool? I mean uTorrent was cool till it wasn’t. I never update it but I tried it out on Linux earlier this year and even with a VPN it leaked and i got a message from my ISP next day. That’s likely on me and bad settings but just checking

  • That’s curious. I actually feel more and more lucid starting around noon or whenever the sun starts setting, and into the night. The person in the mirror starts to actually look decent, I feel more free and happy, etc.

Can’t go to sunrise if it can be helped. For some reason it’s just a punch in the face to me. I probably have issues with responsibilities or something.

We are all weird creatures for sure though even just based on the comments in this post.

  • It was indeed fun! All my rescues have an interesting sometimes tragic story. I’ll have to compile a book someday. Short of one kitten, I never posted anything on reddit. Though my first, who had to be put down at 18 because she was miserable, gained a little fame on fark back in the day.

Anyway, Carmen looks great! Healthy and happy and I love the black nose! It looks almost fake… you didn’t spray paint your cat right? Jk! Hard to believe you found her alone and crying years ago, but I’m glad she found you

Oh, FWIW I couldn’t see your pic on lemmy (boost) and had to log in to kbin on desktop and find this thread and then could see it. I thought fediverse stuff was all connected? Oh well, I got to see her and your cat-tax balance has been cleared. Have a good w/e!

  • That’s great you rescued her. And if you can rub the belly that means 100% trust. Not that mine don’t trust me… some just don’t like it. One of mine does, the other gets confused and flips over so I rub topside and the other nutcase just seems to find great amusement in setting a trap.

Interesting about the food. Mine won’t tolerate a low food bowl… they get super nutty when that happens. My primary 2 share an always full of healthy food bowl. While they eat the same amounts one is super skinny and the other obese. It would be impossible to try and separate their diets so as long as they are active, healthy and happy I see no reason to change it up. But I’m noting the spoon trick if it should ever be needed!

I hope your rescue brings you happiness for your efforts. :) I’ve always found cats complex and often annoying but they have a way of being quite loving… when It suits them anyway.

  • That’s awful. Not new, but i guess it’s becoming more common.

I was forced to abandon Linux on desktop in 2007. This year on a whim I got back a couple AIOs I had gifted and installed KDE neon and was blown away at how nice it was. And absurdly fast at that.

My main still has to run win for not just games but also Visio. What really gets me is the tools platform i need for work will only run on win despite it being essentially java based. If allowed to run on native Linux I can’t help but think it would be much much faster.

I’m currently testing out a portable base win10VM for those softwares. Not an ideal solution but it’s working.

I guess while I’m at it I’ll go ahead and ask… is there any OSS alternative to Visio?

  • Well that is certainly neat how easy it is to add an inline image.

He came passing through one day after I finished mowing the lawn about 3 yrs ago. He was navigating the sprinklers and eating bugs. Pretty pathetic. I couldn’t get near him but I went and got some meow mix. I’d never feed my cats this unless emergency as it seems to be like cotton candy or something to them so I exploited that and in a few days I got to pet him.

Was like petting a skeleton. I let him in but could tell that wasn’t gonna fly with my other 2. So I installed a cat door so he could access the garage. I’m not sure he’s very bright as it was exhausting getting him to figure out he could simply walk through it. He’s been around ever since aside from those mysterious 6 weeks.

He’s not handsome anymore but he’s cool. I’ll give him some scritches as you requested, just not on the belly! Like another rescue he forgets that he is safe now and instincts take over when touched the wrong way. Thanks for listening to my dumb cat story!
