YESSSS 🎉🎉🎉
Love these news, I almost shed a tearIn terms of becoming a real competitor of YouTube, this is a huge step. Accessibility is a must.
Amazing news!
Could PeerTube have crowdsourced captions? IIRC, YouTube used to have this, but removed it.
I guess it could, but implementing it in a decentralized system is probably more complicated at this point than having computer generated ones.
True, but computer generated captions aren’t perfect, and having a way for viewers to make corrections would be useful.
Also true. There’s a lot of enthusiasm in the Fediverse about writing alt texts, so who knows! It’s a lot more work, but similar ballpark.
I feel like Cunningham’s law can be leveraged here. If someone spots a mistake in a computer generated caption and there is an option to correct it, someone will correct it!
Any corrections could also be used to train (hopefully open source) speech-to-text software.
Yeah, having an option to suggest corrections to captions would probably be much more popular than actually writing them from scratch. I doubt it will be high on the list of priorities, but it would be a neat feature for sure.
I still don’t get how to actually use peertube beyond links that other people post here on Lemmy.
You can use https://sepiasearch.org/ to search across most PeerTube instances, and you can use NewPipe to view videos too (you have to add each instance you care about manually)
I haven’t used it much either as often times the instances I would make accounts to would go offline on me
It’s a federated system just like Lemmy, Mastodon, …
(One of the) first step would be to find an Instance that you might like to join. https://joinpeertube.org/instances
Then, an App that can also handle peertube would be e.g. NewPipe - which is also a very good 3rd party app for YouTube and alike. https://newpipe.net/
