So Ecuador is fine with using its embassies to house people seeking asylum but won’t grant other countries the same protection?

One of the people in charge of Ecuador when Assage was at the embassy was the guy they violated Mexico for to get. Different gov’t and Ecuador has been in a pretty shitty way for months now.

Israel bombs an Iranian embassy and blatantly violates international law without any repercussions, so of course other states are gonna start doing the same.

Seems like you already barely had any proper diplomatic channels in place if you’ve decided to raid another country’s embassy. Yikes. Can someone explain why Ecuador thought this was worth an incident?

The person arrested is Jorge Glas, a leftist politician in contact with ex-president and socialist Rafael Correia.

Ecuador’s current president is Daniel Noboa, son of billionaire and previous presidential candidate Arvalo Noboa who Correia had investigated for tax evasion, slave/child labour, money laundering etc. so naturally they hate Jorge Glas.

Perhaps Daniel wanted a win against Correia supporters, and maybe felt emboldened by israel’s recent bombing of the Iranian embassy. Similar to israel, he probably doesn’t have to worry about the US disapproving of this move since the target is a leftist and he’s a capitalist.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Mexico suspended relations with Ecuador after security officials there raided its embassy late Friday night.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador instructed his foreign minister to cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador, calling the raid “a flagrant violation of international law and of Mexico’s sovereignty.”

Other countries in the region, including Bolivia, Chile, Cuba and Venezuela, expressed outrage at Ecuador’s actions, while Honduras called on the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to convene an emergency meeting over the matter.

Glas was sentenced to six years in prison in 2017, after he was found guilty of receiving bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for granting it government contracts.

He served time for the conviction and was released from prison in November 2022, only to face another arrest warrant for allegedly diverting funds intended for reconstruction efforts following a devastating 2015 earthquake.

The former vice president, who had served under leftist Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2017, argues he is being persecuted by the attorney general’s office.
