Can’t even customize a lot of things anymore. You like pure black as in #000000. Google says fuck you. You want to know what time it is to the second. Google says fuck you. Want to control your notification LED. Google says fuck you. Want to prevent apps from being purged from the memory. Google says fuck you. I genuinely hope something else comes along soon. And no I don’t want Apple, they’re even worse than Google.

I remember when Android was about an open ecosystem full of various phone providers and choice.

      Now it’s basically

      • Google
      • Samsung

      Fucking lame

I wonder if Motorola phones would count since their mobile division was largely acquired by Lenovo (and as far as I can tell, are still open platforms)

There are a few usable linux phones you can look into, but they do come with drawbacks.

I remember when I bricked my Note3 because I wanted the Note8 DarkLord firmware. That thing was called a PHABLET back in the days! It was like a folding phone, but a single piece! And nowadays it‘s smaller than a regular iPhone

Oh my God thank you. What the hell happened to our hacker community? Why has it rolled over and taken this bs? Where is cyanogen when we need him most?

We have graphene and lineage and mobile Linux

It’s just your bank and mobile providers apps won’t work on those, and you kind of need their shitty in app 2fa these days.

I use lineage. The second image is highly accurate. In the old days we’d have a dozen different roms per device, and just as many workarounds for device integrity nonsense.

And the roms actually added features and customizability. Now you’re lucky to get an AOSP fork that will boot without issues, which is all Lineage really is anymore.

I just discussed this with a coworker. I haven’t been in the modding community for years, but I was shocked to see XDA pretty much dead when I visited it couple weeks ago. I miss the days I couldn’t decide which ROM and kernel to use because the choice was so big.

Actually that’s slightly outdated news, GrapheneOS does have compatibility with quite a few banking apps now (they even have a community supported list on their site, and I’m using mine rn on Graphene)

We knew in 2015 what the end-game was, absolutely clear.

Megacorps don’t do shit if they can’t bring the market to a point they can monetise it, preferably in a way where the market has no other/different choice.

Back in the day, men who shaved would use a cutthroat razor that would last for decades. Eventually, a capitalist started giving safety razors away for free, knowing folks would end up paying much more in the long run when they brought new blades year after year…

    Similar maketing.

Having experience with both, I can tell you that a safety razor is way easier to use than a straight razor, and gets you the same result in half the time.

lol! I stole my father’s straight razor and used it for a while. I never learned how to keep it sharp, so I abandoned it for plastic ones. Currently using an old fashioned, double edged safety razor. The best option imho.

For way cheaper than the big brand razors with 3748484 blades that go dull in 4 shaves

Now safety razors are actually the massive innovation of convenience, accessibility and low cost. While the industry moved onto cramming more and more redundant blades into their proprietary plastic cartridges while charing a 2000% markup.

I don’t know how that analogy extends to phones but I’m not looking forward to that inevitable future.

Also safety razors are recyclable. Those plastic cartridges, since plastics and metals have to be separated, aren’t recyclable.

This is 100% how I feel. I started with Samsung back in 12-14’ and now I can’t do shit without breaking things. Google had now become Apple with their phone environment or are walking close to the same line.

And Apple is implementing stuff that Android deleted years ago, like a seperate screen for all apps installed
