Kbinauts and kbeans are the names I’ve seen used. I prefer kbinaut and I think it’s growing in use haha.

I’ve seen Kbeans and I think it’s both funny and useful. Cartoony beans would make a great snoo replacement, both in logo and if Ernest plans on adding an equivalent to reddit’s user snoos.

One of the things that I think made our exodus site so endearing is that we had a cute logo from the start. In that vein, and with many folks thinking about us collectively calling ourselves kbinauts, I thought to make a little logo with a spaceship. What do ya’ll think? Can someone with more skills doctor this up?

Also, for those with their own ideas, feel free to post your own in the comments. Maybe we can settle on one and make it ours. I’d like to start seeing these logos all out in the real world one day.

I’m no artist but my vote goes towards the mascot being some sort of alien (or maybe astronaut?) with a gun. the gun to match the karabin source of the name, the alien to match the “kbinauts” moniker.

I’ve been wondering where “kbin” came from. So it’s confirmed that the original Polish version is supposed to be named “rifle”?

So I just stumbled upon one of ernest’s comments about it. Yes, the polish instance is a play on words referencing a rifle. however it seems the original “kbin” name actually stems from unix’s “sbin”.

I guess in the end it ends up being a double reference?

That makes a lot of sense! I really like that reference and how the logo is stylized as a forward slash

Oh so THAT’S why it’s stylized as “/kbin” on kbin.pub. And why the logo kinda looks like a folder. Interesting!

I mean just look at mastodon and how omnipresent the mascot is. It would be relly great if Kbin had one, too. Sadly I am neigher an artist nor super creative when it comes to this stuff

I’m a professional concept artist. The worst thing you could say in our field is actually “let’s draw something together”:)

Design by committee results in abominations 99.99% of the times.

I’d say let just people draw stuff if they want and then we pick the best.

Did Ernest ever explain the origin and pronunciation of the name? While there would be a certain tragicomic open-source poetry in ignoring what he had assumed would happen, it would be relevant information.
