I think that’s a bad analogy for a few reasons. First, all the examples you’ve posted are specifically meme template-friendly subs, which makes sense since they’re inherently easy to repost. I don’t think think a baking community would have that problem. But even if it did, you could just start a new baking community that bans reposts? Given how unpopular repost bots are, I assume your anti-repost baking community would be more popular than the hypothetical pro-repost baking community that your posts are buried in. Assuming that repost bots are drowning out more organic content, which prima facie doesn’t seem to be the case in either community you screenshotted as examples. Both seem like pretty solid examples of their being no other content.

Structurally speaking, up and down votes should ideally, roughly sort posts by quality. A post being buried (unpopular) in a community isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

If fear of not getting enough internet points is what’s keeping someone from posting, that’s more on them.

All the posts in the OP seem to have generated engagement though. Just because the poster is a bot doesn’t mean all comments are.

I guess I’m in the extreme minority, but like… All the posts in OP are heavily upvoted and spawned comments. That’s… good? I don’t see why people care more about where a post comes from than the fact that large stretches of the Threadiverse are barren and reposts are the only content available.

Sanitation is my most upvoted Threadiverse poster, and I’d rather have their content than nothing. Which, largely, is the alternative.

All of those posts are heavily upvoted and have multiple comments though? Accreditation, etc. are all valid critiques, but I genuinely don’t understand why so many people care about the provenance of posts.

It’s been about 18 months since I last tried to use Proton for photo backup, so maybe things have gotten better. Proton Calendar certainly has. But at the time, it had no support for searching, tagging, or location metadata, didn’t respect existing albums, picture previews were unusably slow (maybe because of encryption, in which case, fair I guess) it didn’t let you select what folders you wanted to update (so instead of just backing up my camera photos, it would back up downloads, screenshots, memes, etc.). It lacked the ability to select all or groups of photos, even just straight uploading would be painfully slow and fail frequently.

I didn’t mean to imply that I recommend Google Photos (I was hoping the emoji would make that clear), only that OP may want to consider an off-site backup as part of their backup solution. Everyone should. Self-hosting Immich is great, easy, free, etc., but it also shifts the failure point of your potentially irreplaceable photos to single hard drive in your possession, subject to the whims of a house fire, earthquake, etc.

Proton Drive for photo storage is a horrible experience, though.

Realistically, are you sure you want to ditch iCloud? I know this is a privacy and not a data hoarding community, but even though I self-host Immich, Google Photos (🤮) is still the off-site part of my 3-2-1 backup solution.

The main reason I landed on piefed.zip was because it was the only instance I could find that didn’t defederate any content; piracy, .ml instances, hexbear, etc. Not that I necessarily want that content, but I don’t like the idea of an instance admin making that decision for me. I checked all the pylova instances and they seem to all defederate the above to varying degrees. Is the only way to ensure I see the whole Fediverse to spin up my own instance? (Something I’m very sure I do not have the know-how to do.)

What questionable choices are baked into Piefed?

Not leaving the internet wholesale, per se, but I’m guessing the majority of people in the Fediverse are functionally trying to roll back to a pre-2020 internet.

Same. I’ve been using DDG as my default for years, but it’s main strength for me is using !g to redo the search after not finding anything good the first time.

I feel like a lot of the specific criticisms you’re getting are valid, but I mostly agree with you on the broad strokes. I didn’t come here because I hate Reddit, I came here because I hate what Reddit became.* I’m glad you’re populating my feed with interesting posts, although I hope you take the feedback here (especially about accreditation) to heart.

*what I actually hate about Reddit is the culture of unaccountable moderators that can do whatever they want with no recourse just because they claimed a subreddit name first, and your quadruple moderation comment also rings true. This is like my fourth instance before finally finding one that doesn’t defederate any communities I want to follow.

Just tried Comaps and It was pleasantly acceptable.
