I’m registered with lemmy.zip, but I commented on a post in lemmy.world and it won’t seem to show up in the post, although it does show up in my comments list. Do some instances(?) block comments from other instances? Or is this a sub(?) thing?
I’m a pretty new reddifugee and still trying to get the hang of this. Feel free to correct my terminology, please.
Also a reddifugee, is there something we need to do to interact with the whole of Lemmy instead of just the server you registered on? (link please?) TIA
I’ve been using Mlem on iOS and it makes it easy. I thought it was standard to see other instances. Unfortunately it also seems to have an issue with some comments, but I think I’m going to wait it out to see if they fix it. I tried a few other Lemmy apps and do not care for the look or set up.
One thing you need to know is that communities of other Lemmy servers (instances) are not “visible” to your instance automatically (there is a Github issue in the Lemmy repo that attempts to solve this in the v1.1.0 release), so you, as a user, have to introduce it to your instance.
This is only required if the instance has never seen the community before.
You can read how you can accomplish this in the Lemmy docs or the Fedecan guide:
- Lemmy docs: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/federation_getting_started.html
- Fedecan guide: https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/for-users/how-to-open-in-my-instance
The Fedecan guide might also help you understand the Fediverse and how Lemmy works better. Check the whole guide: https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/overview
The second thing you should know is that the whole thing about every instance being federated with every other instances is a big exxageration.
Many instances defederate with each other.
Defederation means your instance won’t “communicate” with the defederated instance. This means your interactions will not be visible to the other instance with one exception, and that is when you are posting to a remote community on a instance that is not defederated with your instance AND is not defederated with the instance that your instance defederated with.
Communities in Lemmy are built on ActivityPub Group actor types and the specification states that the instance of the group actor announces activities, not your instance: https://fediverse.codeberg.page/fep/fep/1b12/
That basically means the instance of the community acts like a middle man that delivers messages.
In this case, the defederated instance will be able to interact with your posts in that community while your instance never will know about it.
I closed the Mlem app and reopened and the comments I couldn’t see in the posts are there now. Seems it may be a Mlem issue. I’ll inform them of it. I really like the app and hope they can fix it so I don’t have to learn a new one.
Thanks for the answers yous guys.
For what it’s worth, I tried a bunch of different Lemmy apps back when I first migrated over and disliked all of them compared to the plain old browser based interface. It’s what I’ve been using ever since.
I was worried about this. I’m an app guy. Although, I think Safari can make an app out of any webpage now, so maybe it will work out for me.
Boost, Jerboa and Voyager are all solid choices
I’m assuming Boost and Jerboa are android apps. I couldn’t find those, and I tried Voyager today and I’m not feeling the set up. It’s basically the same as Mlem, but feels clunkier and isn’t as easy for me to follow. I do appreciate the reply and suggestions.
Voyager is great idk what they’re on about
Different people have different preferences. It’s kind of a thing with humans.
Yup. I’m not liking Voyager at all.
I’m trying out Voyager now and so far I’m not liking it. This is purely from an aesthetics perspective. It has a lot going on and isn’t as easy to follow for me. I only just started digging through the settings, so that may change.
Can I ask what other Lemmy apps you’ve used and why you prefer Voyager?
If it’s this post: https://lemmy.world/post/39435774
Then your comment is visible. If might have taken a few minutes to federate, is all.
That’s interesting. It still hasn’t populated for me. I’m going to try a different app to access Lemmy and see what happens. I’ve only ever used Mlem, so I have no other reference ATP.
Can confirm. I’m on dbzer0.
Do you use an app to access Lemmy and, if so, which one do you use? I chose Mlem due to its aesthetics matching iOS 26, but if they don’t fix this soon I’ll be switching over to another app exclusively. I’ve downloaded Voyager and Arctic to try out.
https://alexandrite.app/ site. I don’t bother with an actual app.
Link?

Interestingly, your comment doesn’t show up in my post. I had to reply from my inbox. Could this be an app issue? I’m using Mlem.
Your comments show up for me, so yeah, might be your client. Check the web client for comparison.
I closed the app and reopened it; it’s 100% the app. Thanks for helping me troubleshoot. For future reference, is the web client just lemmy.zip(for me, since that is the instance I signed up with)?
The easiest is via the profile page of your home instance, but technically you can also use Lemmy.world or wherever the community lives.
Thanks. I’ll have to play around with this on my computer later on today. Lemmy is a wonderful, albeit confusing at times, community.
